Job overview
As part of the ongoing expansion and modernisation of the Royal Eye Unit we are growing our team to ensure we continue to deliver a high standard of care to our local community. As such we are looking to recruit enthusiastic and dynamic people to join our supportive and friendly team during this exciting time.
Applications are invited for the position of Clinical Fellow in Medical Retina and cataract surgery within our thriving Ophthalmology Department at Kingston Hospital NHS Foundation Trust. The role will also involve 1 clinical session at Moorfields Eye Hospital (as an Honorary Fellow) to gain experience in specialist clinics.
This is an excellent opportunity to work within the Royal Eye Unit where our multidisciplinary team see over 70,000 patients per year. We offer a full range of hospital eye care services including specialist outpatient clinics, admitted care and an acute referral service for eye emergencies.
This is a Permanent appointment based in the Royal Eye Unit at Kingston Hospital. The post is full time, 40 hours per week with no additional on-call rota participation.
Main duties of the job
The service-line has regular educational meetings and actively supports opportunities for personal development of appointed staff. The post holder will be expected to participate in the postgraduate teaching of medical staff and undergraduates attached to the Trust and in the training of all grades of staff.
Candidates must hold full registration and license with the GMC.

Person specification
Skills/Ability/ Knowledge
* Competence in management of Ophthalmology patients
* Good organisation
* Ability to organise own learning and time
* A keen interest in the development of teaching methods and practical teaching skills
* Other specific medical interests
* Qualification in teaching such as ‘Teach the Trainers’ course
Personal Qualities
* Ability to cope with stressful situations, undertake responsibility and be a team player
* Enthusiastic and approachable
* Ability to keep good medical records and communicate with other hospital departments and primary care
* Ability to understand and communicate with patients and colleagues.
* Demonstrable skills in listening, reading, writing and speaking English that enable effective communication about medical topics with patients and colleagues as set out by the GMC’s Good Medical Practice (2014)
* If the Primary Medical Qualification including contact was not carried out using English, applicants must either have an academic IELTS score of at least 7.0 in each domain and an overall score of 7.5 within the same test to meet GMC requirements OR complete the medical Occupational English test (OET) and achieve a grade B in each of the four domains tests to meet GMC requirements
* Ability to travel between clinical sites
* Ability to undertake research projects and audit
* Show interest in investigative, audit and research work outside immediate clinical responsibility

* Full GMC registration and a license to practice

Clinical Experience
* Applicants must evidence at least 3 years of ophthalmic training equivalent to that recognised in the UK
* Able to deal with general Ophthalmology emergencies
* Evidence of participation in research and continued professional development
* Logbook indicating validated experience of appropriate range and number of clinical procedures including cataract surgery
* Experience in cataract surgery
* Attendance at relevant ophthalmic training courses
* Experience of developing effective and collaborative working relationships
