Consultant in Emergency Medicine
NHS Medical & Dental: Consultant
Job overview
We are offering an exciting opportunity for Consultants to join our forward thinking and ambitious trust and department. Our department was opened in 2014 as part of the Urgent and Emergency Care Centre at New Cross Hospital. It boasts its own CT/MRI/USS services purpose built to facilitate the department and a co-located SDEC and AMU. We are also collocated to an Urgent Care Centre.
New Cross Hospital is a Trauma unit offering Cardiothoracic and PCI services. We link in with all specialties across the hospital and have successfully embedded an innovative way of working with our Acute Medicine colleagues. We have Acute Medicine Consultants working within the Emergency Department until 10pm seven days a week and boast one of the lowest admission rates in the region.
Main duties of the job
The department itself sees around 470 patients per day across Majors, Minors, Resus, and paediatrics. Our dedicated Paediatric area of the department offers a 24-hour service and is run by our Paediatric Emergency Medicine Consultants between the hours of 0800 and 2400. We also have specific ACPs for paediatrics.
We will support joint roles such as research, education and simulation, intensive care, pre-hospital emergency medicine, paediatric emergency medicine, sports and exercise medicine, frailty, and acute medicine.
Many of our consultants have dual roles and this is something that can be negotiated on successful appointment into post. There is a range of differing responsibilities including one of our consultants being the Divisional Medical Director, splitting his time between ED and wider management, another consultant who is paramount to the pre-hospital care team bringing a wealth of knowledge and experience to the department, and a dual trained Consultant who works within Adult Emergency Care and Paediatric Emergency Care. On top of this, we have Clinical Educator roles supported by RCEM and HEE which offers specific time supernumerary to the department to teach and support all members of the MDT.
We are happy to consider applicants who are within 6 months of completion of CCT or CESR.
Working for our organisation
We are part of the Clinical Research Network West Midlands, with strong links to Birmingham and Wolverhampton Universities. The trust is renowned for being a teaching trust offering a nurturing and supportive environment to all of its employees. We have a robust clinical fellow programme with access to a SIM ward for all areas of teaching.
