Senior Governance Officer Basildon Borough Council Location: Basildon (Hybrid working - 3 days per week office-based) Contract: Temporary - 3 months Rate: £30 per hour (umbrella) Closing Date: 9th February 2025 About the Role We are currently seeking an experienced Senior Governance Officer to join Basildon Borough Council's Committee, Member and Executive Support Service. This key position sits at the heart of the Council's democratic and decision-making process, offering an excellent opportunity for a governance professional to make a significant impact. Key Responsibilities Manage and coordinate Cabinet, Committee, and Sub-Committee meetings, including quasi-judicial hearings and panels Prepare and distribute meeting agendas, ensuring all materials are collated and checked according to strict deadlines Attend and support evening meetings (hybrid or in-person), providing procedural, legal, and constitutional advice to Members Draft and prepare high-quality reports for Council, Cabinet, and committees Provide expert guidance on democratic and decision-making processes across the organisation Maintain comprehensive work plans and drive the agenda business planning system Ensure all meetings comply with legislative requirements and the Council's Constitution Required Skills & Experience Substantial experience in local government governance Expert knowledge of local government legislative framework and decision-making processes Strong attention to detail and ability to work to strict deadlines Excellent written and verbal communication skills Proven ability to provide professional advice to elected Members and senior officers Experience in managing and coordinating formal meetings Capability to work independently and as part of a team Flexibility to attend evening meetings as required The Organisation Basildon Borough Council serves a population of 172,000 and is one of the largest local authorities in the East of England.
