Working under the direct supervision of the senior practice nurse and strictly in accordance with specific practice guidelines and protocols, the phlebotomist will assist the practice clinical team in the provision and delivery of prescribed programmes of patient care.
Hours will be a total of 16-20 per week over up to four mornings.

Main duties of the job
* Phlebotomy for patients with acute and chronic disease or other clinical requirements.
* Processing and management of laboratory samples requested by GPs/nurses.
* Helping to raise awareness of health and well-being and how it can be promoted.
* Assisting with the collection and collation of data on needs related to health and well-being.

Job responsibilities
* Obtain blood samples from patients in support of laboratory procedures used in the diagnosis and treatment of disease.
* Perform a variety of routine blood drawing procedures, to include venepuncture, using standard equipment.
* Interact directly with patients to obtain information for laboratory records, explain procedures, allay fears, and elicit cooperation.
* Ensure that the patient is comfortable and as relaxed as possible and confirm their agreement to the collection of a blood sample.
* Accurate, legible labelling of all samples to confirm patient identity.
* Check patient identification against EMIS records and confirm with the patient whenever possible.
* Record the collection of blood samples in the patient's record using correct nursing templates.
* Ensure samples are stored in appropriate containers.
* Ensure that samples are dispatched to the appropriate laboratories in a timely fashion.
* Ensure that anomalies are reported to a senior member of staff.
* Notify the GP/Nurse of any significant patient issues.
* Perform various quality control procedures to maintain compliance with internal and external regulations.
Person Specification
Qualifications
* GCSE grade A to C in English and Maths.
* Qualified to NVQ level 2 in Health and Social Care.
* Phlebotomy training.
