A Pastoral Support Staff member is needed asap for a Pupil Referral Unit in the Northumberland area for pupils of age 6-14. This is a long-term role to start asap. The successful candidate will have strong behaviour management and de-escalation skills. The school was rated 'Good' in its last Ofsted inspection.
Suitable candidates will preferably have experience working with students who have SEMH/behavioural issues and/or other SEND needs (e.g. ADHD, Autism, ADD). You will need to be proactive in your approach to working with students from challenging backgrounds and be encouraging, energetic, engaging, and supportive.
You must hold a Teaching Assistant, Counselling, or Youth Work qualification and have a background working with SEMH and/or a willingness to work with children with disadvantaged backgrounds who struggle to adapt to mainstream schools.
The school is dedicated to getting the best out of every pupil, and aligned to that, class sizes are small to encourage close relationships and a personal learning approach. Outdoor learning is encouraged wherever possible.
The school is mixed sex and has supportive and friendly staff and managers.
The ideal candidate would:
1. Have a passion for supporting children with SEMH
2. Have counselling or previous mentoring experience
3. Be able to de-escalate situations but also be firm but fair when needed
4. Have excellent subject knowledge
5. Be able to organise themselves
6. Be able to engage with children with SEMH in a proactive way
In addition, you must:
1. Provide two referees we can contact
2. Have a DBS form or be prepared to obtain one
