To assist in maintaining the highest possible standard of care under the supervision of a Registered nurse. To maintain a tidy and welcoming environment for patients and relatives., Responsible for providing a range of personalised care for patients under the guidance and supervision of a registered nurse including: assisting patients with personal hygiene, toileting, use of continence aids, catheter care, measuring patient output, support patients nutritional and hydration needs, moving and handling, use of mobility appliances, correct patient positioning, ensuring patient safety, taking specimens and observing patients for changes in condition.
To support the productive operation of the ward environment by undertaking a range of non-clinical activities which contribute to the maintenance of a safe and clean environment.

An opportunity has arisen for new healthcare assistants to join the Emergency Surgical Assessment unit (ESU) at Royal Blackburn Hospital. The shift patterns are internal rotation including night shifts, 37.5 hours per week (or part time hours available) over flexible days, to include weekends and bank holidays, included as per rota., Under the supervision of the Registered Nurse provide care to the highest attainable standard as an effective member of the clinical team, in accordance with agreed Nursing Practice.
Weigh patients and document results as appropriate.
Assist with the cleaning/disinfecting of bed/trolleys/lockers in accordance with Infection Control Policies, including the making of beds & trolleys.
Undertake safe transfer and escort of patients as directed by the Healthcare Professional.Ensure safe moving and positioning of patients including the use of mechanical aids and bed appliances.
Assist patients with all aspects of personal hygiene, under supervision.
Assist patients to use toilet facilities including commodes, toilet utensils etc.
Assist in the care of pressure areas and the care of the incontinent patient.
Assist patients with dietary intake.
Recognise and respond appropriately to urgent and emergency situations.
Inform staff immediately of any concerns regarding patients condition.
Have a workable knowledge of the general and specific infection control measures and related issues.
Participate in the Major Incident Procedure within the Trust guidelines.
Check, clean and ensure all equipment prior to admission / discharge is in good working order e.g. linen, oxygen suction, resuscitation equipment, replace as required in consultation with senior staff, also replace oxygen cylinders on trolleys as required.
Ensure that day - to - day stock levels are maintained e.g. linen and clinical equipment. Order and replace as appropriate.
Store all supplies and equipment, and report any discrepancies.
Assist in the cleaning of clinical areas and equipment, ensuring that the area is clear of potential hazards, removing soiled linen, clinical waste and contaminated items to relevant collection areas.
Maintain care of sanitary utensils, including disinfection of baths .bins,& commodes after use in accordance with Infection Control Policies.
Be responsible for the tidiness and cleanliness of all clinical areas, including waiting areas, stock rooms and patient areas.
Assist nursing staff with effective stock control and cost effectiveness via on-line ordering.
Answer telephone, take, and record/ transmit messages to qualified staff.
Carry out errands between wards/departments, including the collection and delivery of specimens to the laboratory.
Assist with movement of patients to other wards, clinics or departments by either walking with them, or with the patients in chairs, trolleys or beds, and undertake chaperon and escort duties.
Help patients with the care of their personal belongings.
Report to the person in charge, all observations made of the patient and any concerns.
In the absence of the Ward Secretary enter patient information on a computerised Patient Administration System (P.A.S.), and perform general office duties e.g. filing, photocopying and use of facsimile as required.
Ensure departmental linen is adequately stocked reporting any problems to ward manager.
Collection and transportation of linen stock and other supplies, trolleys, to and from the department.
Act as chaperone for nursing / medical staff as required.
Ordering of departmental food / drink provisions, ensuring that all stocks delivered to the ward are appropriately stored.
Organise and supply refreshments for patients and relatives as required.
Collection of individual patient's meals as required.
Cleaning of kitchen areas including appliances.
Assist in the cleaning of clinical areas and equipment, ensuring that the area is clear of potential hazards.
Communication
Ensure effective communication and maintain a good liaison when dealing with patients, visitors and work colleagues.
Maintain a confidential and professional approach when dealing with patients, their relatives and other professionals, e.g.Multi Disciplinary Teams.
Participate in regular staff meetings.
Ensure compliance with policies, procedures and clinical guidelines for self and others.
Comply with complaints policies and procedures.
Report any concern regarding patient care to senior nurse.
Support people's equality, diversity and rights., Develop own skills and knowledge and contribute to the development of others e.g. peers & apprentices.
Attend statutory and mandatory training as required.
Participate in personal development review, personal development plan and maintain personal development portfolio. Achieve agreed learning objectives.
Contribute to the development of the service.
