Clinical Teaching Fellow Brunel Medical School – 2 posts available
These 12 month posts are an excellent opportunity for candidates to work as a Clinical Teaching Fellow in Medical Education whilst gaining clinical experience. All training will take place at the Royal Berkshire Hospital.
These posts have been established to enhance the teaching of students and maintain the Royal Berkshire Hospital’s reputation as a centre of excellence for medical education. The role will be specifically responsible for students from Brunel Medical School, including supporting the development of new cohorts of students this year in Oncology, Haematology, Palliative Care, Elderly Care, Neurology, Ophthalmology, ENT, Dermatology, Paediatrics, and Obstetrics and Gynaecology.
The successful applicant must have a license to practice from the GMC and experience in providing clinical teaching. Applicants with at least 2 years NHS post-graduate experience and a strong interest in medical education will be considered.
The students are present in the trust for set blocks covering 30 weeks of the year. The remaining weeks of the post holder’s time will be spent on doing clinical work, in a medical specialty of their choice depending on availability. There is no on-call commitment with this role.
All teaching fellows will have access to a tutor who will provide mentorship with educational projects as well as an educational supervisor.
Undergraduate Teaching
The post will be tailored to the successful applicant and their specific interests and could include any of the following:
1. Responsibility for facilitating the medical attachments and placements of medical students
2. Production of teaching resources and delivery of formal teaching sessions
3. Helping develop and adapt existing teaching models and courses for medical students
4. Taking on a leadership and mentorship role for medical students and providing a forum to give feedback and help develop and enhance their learning and well-being
5. Engage in quality improvement projects and developing potential teaching courses
6. Bedside teaching including demonstration of clinical signs and examination
7. Procedural skills teaching
8. Coordinating student timetabling
9. Contribute to running and developing simulation sessions
10. Assisting the Undergraduate Managers in delivering key medical student inductions
11. Contributing to University activities including student examination question writing and piloting
We encourage development of teaching skills and also publication of work and projects. Previous teaching fellows have successfully presented work at national and international meetings.
Collaboration and shared teaching opportunities for different groups of students is encouraged and organising postgraduate sessions will also be welcomed by the department. There may also be opportunities to attend training workshops provided by Brunel and Southampton University.
