Brook Street requires a Court Usher for the Ministry of Justice to join the busy team on a temporary basis until February 2025 based at Yeovil Law Courts. Assignment likely to be extended.
Our client, HM Courts & Tribunals Service (HMCTS), is an agency of the Ministry of Justice. HMCTS provides administrative support for the legal system across England and Wales, ensuring justice works for everyone.
The role is temporary and is expected to run for 6 months from the start date. Working full time is 37 hours per week, Monday to Friday.
Successful applicants would primarily be a court usher within the court.
Duties may include but are not limited to:
1. Ushering in a courtroom, getting parties within the court, collecting witnesses and victims from witness support and bringing them to the court.
2. Assisting with the cloud video platform in court.
3. Collecting and delivering files and bundles to the judiciary and clerks ensuring they have the necessary papers.
4. Providing support to colleagues & judiciary outside of court/hearing times.
5. General clerical/admin work, including use of computers and switchboard.
6. Filling out forms.
7. Operating recording equipment and maintaining records of recordings of hearings.
8. Sorting and delivering lists of hearings for internal & external notice boards.
9. Opening, sorting, distributing, and dispatching post as required.
10. Collecting and delivering post from appropriate offices.
11. Ensuring courtrooms are supplied against requirements for relevant forms and stationery.
12. Collecting and delivering stationery around the offices.
13. Providing information related to proceedings, escorting court users into and from the building, swearing oaths, etc.
14. Calling people into court/hearing rooms in priority order, discussing with Court Clerks and Legal Advisers and liaising with the Witness Service as necessary.
15. Answering face-to-face enquiries.
16. Keeping parties informed of changes, e.g., courtrooms and hearing times.
Ideal candidates will be confident, enjoy interacting with a variety of court users, and have excellent customer service skills with a passion to help people.
Required Skills:
1. Good working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook.
2. Excellent communication skills both written and verbal.
3. Ability to remain calm in potentially difficult situations.
4. Ability to remain professional at all times and converse with a variety of court users.
5. Excellent customer service skills.
The pay rate is £11.44/hr and benefits include holiday pay and pension scheme. Full training will be given.
