Greyfriars Kirk is a pioneering Church of Scotland congregation in the centre of Edinburgh. Over the past 25 years, we have expanded our ministry to our neighbours with themes of community, harnessing the goodwill of volunteers; compassion, supporting people suffering deep social exclusion; culture, using our building to tell our historic story and host musical events; and commerce, enabling activities through social enterprise.
As one of Edinburgh’s renowned historic and iconic landmarks, Greyfriars Kirk has become a popular destination welcoming over 100,000 visitors annually between February and December and offering a small museum and shop. As an events venue, Greyfriars hosts a wide variety of events throughout the year and with an annual audience of over 20,000.
The Role:
If you have experience working in a public facing role using excellent customer service and communication skills, then we want to hear from you. We are looking for the right individual to provide a warm welcome to Kirk visitors and guide them around the Kirk, museum and shop.
As the first point of contact, you will lead by example providing an exceptional welcome and seize all opportunities to grow income by encouraging donations, providing information on venue for events and promoting the Kirk shop.
Duties and Responsibilities:
* Present a warm welcome to visitors and provide them with the relevant information so they can experience the Kirk’s historical significance.
* Assist the Communications Coordinator in managing the Visitor Volunteer Team rota.
* Oversee the training and support of new Visitor Volunteers.
* Maintain all shop and visitor administration – signage, leaflets, and booklets.
* Ensure all visitor leaflet stands are full at all times and liaise with leaflet distributors.
* Assist in achieving income targets through visitor donations, tours, and shop sales.
* Assist in the delivery of the Volunteer Strategy.
* Undertake routine housekeeping duties to ensure the porch and welcome area is clean, tidy, and ready for visitors.
* Assist in creating a culture in which customer service is at the forefront of everything we do.
* Work in conjunction with the Volunteer Shop Managers to ensure the souvenir shop is well presented, stock levels maintained, and cash handling procedures are adhered to at all times.
* Be willing to act as a Duty Manager at Outreach events held at the Kirk.
Person Specification:
To succeed in this role, you will need the following range of knowledge, skills, and experience:
* Previous experience in delivering exceptional customer service.
* Strong communication and organisational skills.
* An interest in history and genealogy.
* Current first aid qualification would be advantageous.
