PROFESSIONAL DUTIES OF A TEACHER (NORTHERN IRELAND) 1987
1. Exercise of general professional duties
1. A teacher who is not a principal shall carry out the professional duties of a teacher as circumstances may require.
2. If employed as a teacher in a school, under the reasonable direction of the principal of that school.
3. If employed by a board on terms under which not assigned to any one school, under the reasonable direction of that board and of the principal of any school in which required to work.
2. Exercise of particular duties
1. A teacher employed in a school shall perform duties as assigned by the principal.
2. A teacher not assigned to any one school shall perform duties as directed by the board or principal.
3. Planning
1. Planning and preparing courses and lessons.
2. Teaching according to the educational needs of the pupils assigned.
3. Assessing, recording, and reporting on the development, progress, and attainment of pupils.
4. General
1. Promoting the general progress and well-being of individual pupils and any assigned class or group.
2. Providing advice and guidance to pupils on educational and social matters.
3. Making records of and reports on the personal and social needs of pupils.
4. Communicating with the parents of pupils.
5. Co-operating with approved external persons or bodies.
6. Participating in relevant meetings.
5. Assessment/Reporting
1. Providing or contributing to assessments, reports, and references relating to individual pupils and groups.
6. Staff Development/Professional Development
1. Participating in staff development and performance review.
2. Reviewing teaching methods and programmes of work.
3. Advising and co-operating with the Principal and other teachers on course preparation and development.
7. Discipline/Health and Safety
1. Maintaining order and discipline among pupils in accordance with policies.
2. Participating in meetings related to curriculum and school administration.
8. Public Examinations
1. Participating in preparation and assessment for public examinations.
9. Review and Development of Management Activities/Administration
1. Contributing to the selection and professional development of other teachers.
2. Managing the work of other teachers.
3. Participating in administrative tasks related to curriculum and pastoral functions.
10. Number of days/Hours of work
1. A full-time teacher is available for work on 195 days, with teaching not exceeding 190 days.
2. Teachers shall perform duties as specified by the Principal or Board.
3. Teachers may not be required to teach for more than specified hours per week.
11. Staff cover
1. Supervising and teaching pupils whose teacher is unavailable under specified conditions.
