Hydraulic Component Design Engineer (Part-Time, 12-Month Minimum)
February 2025
An opportunity to provide expert industrial support to the KTP Associate of a Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP) Project between the University of Bath and Hydraulic System Products Ltd (HSP).
About Hydraulic System Products Ltd (HSP)
HSP is a UK-based designer and manufacturer with 50 years of expertise in hydraulic test equipment, valves, and niche control components for fluid power systems. Their products are used across various industrial sectors, supplying both end users and distributors, including major blue-chip OEM customers.
About the Role
HSP is collaborating with the University of Bath on a KTP project aimed at developing and embedding advanced engineering modelling tools for customised product design. This part-time role (approx. one day per week) is available for a minimum of 12 months and involves providing mentorship and technical guidance to the KTP Associate, a postgraduate Design Engineer employed by the University of Bath but working full-time at HSP.
The Associate’s primary responsibility is to develop and embed a structured new product development process, and a key challenge is transitioning products from design prototypes to manufacture. The role would particularly suit a retired or semi-retired professional with hands-on experience in hydraulic valve design and a strong understanding of manufacturing processes.
Key Responsibilities:
* Mentor and support the KTP Associate in design-to-manufacture transition.
* Provide technical expertise in hydraulic valve design and manufacturing.
* Attend face-to-face meetings (once or twice a month) and other remote support (~1 day per week).
Desired Skills & Experience:
The ideal candidate will have practical experience in hydraulic component design, with expertise in moving from prototype development to full-scale production. Key areas of knowledge include:
* Selecting appropriate manufacturing processes for cost-effective and high-quality production.
* Ensuring optimal fits, tolerances, materials, and finishes for precision-machined components.
* Experience in designing and manufacturing mechanical assemblies (such as valves) consisting of precision-machined components.
Candidates with experience in machined component manufacturing from other industries may also be suitable for this role.
A Non-Disclosure Agreement would need to be signed.
Salary to be discussed.
