Overview
Our client, based in the Wirral, are renewable bioenergy and Combined Heat and Power (CHP) specialists, expanding their workforce to meet the growing demand for their products and services. They are an award-winning business specializing in the design, manufacture, and operation of liquid and gas-powered CHP units and power generation systems. Their renewable power systems are utilized by a wide range of commercial applications throughout the UK where zero-carbon energy solutions, reliability, and grid resilience are critical.
The Role of Service Engineer - Mechanical
1. To provide a professional repair service to our client's fleet of biofuel and gas-fueled power generation and combined heat and power systems from 5kWe to 2.5mWe and clusters up to 25mWe.
2. The role involves national travel and overnight stays as required, transitioning to a regionally defined role to reduce travel and lower our client's carbon footprint.
3. Attend client sites to carry out planned preventative maintenance of power generation and combined heat and power units, including breakdowns and unscheduled repairs.
4. Implement maintenance activities per manufacturers' recommendations, from small services to overhauls.
5. Conduct in-depth mechanical fault diagnosis on engines and alternators, including borescope analysis and temperature assessments.
6. Carry out regular radiator and intercooler flush and matrix cleaning.
7. Ensure all systems are safe and adhere to RAMS, completing dynamic Risk Assessments and Method Statements before any job commences.
8. Complete all service repair and defects via digital service software utilizing a tablet, ensuring clear and concise records are captured.
9. Participate in the on-call rota, attending sites as required.
10. Ensure the service van is fully stocked and ready to respond with a first-time fix.
11. Assist with in-frame and out-of-frame engine rebuilds.
12. Remove and replace main alternators, pumps, and heat exchangers.
13. Assist workshop engineering resources as needed.
14. Involve in apprentice training and coaching of young engineers and interdepartmental colleagues.
15. Champion change and share knowledge with the design team to improve system maintenance and uptime.
16. Understand how to reduce unplanned downtime by system alterations and improvements.
Skills and Qualifications
1. Ability to communicate at all levels with non-technical and technical colleagues, customers, and suppliers.
2. A recognized apprenticeship in a motor vehicle or mechanical maintenance discipline or at least 3 years' experience in a similar field-based service engineer role within the power generation industry.
3. A valid gas safe qualification like COCN1, CGFE1 & ICPN1 is desirable.
4. Experience of servicing large engines is essential.
5. Ideally MAN, Siemens (Guascor), CAT, and Perkins OEM trained.
6. Ability to use a computer proficiently for emails, report writing, and system monitoring.
7. Must have a full UK Driving license.
8. Able to obtain an enhanced DBS certificate.
