Main Purpose of the Role
The Facilities Assistant plays a vital role in maintaining the fabric, grounds, and overall environment of our client school. This position is crucial in ensuring the school premises are safe, well-maintained, and conducive to the learning and wellbeing of the pupils. The Facilities Assistant will report to the Facilities Manager and will work collaboratively with the school leadership team, staff, and external contractors to uphold the school's vision and values, creating a positive and nurturing space for the school community.
Key Responsibilities and Duties
1. General Duties
* Prepare and implement risk assessments, contributing to school development projects and general maintenance schedules.
* Demonstrate a hands-on, proactive approach to developing and implementing systems and procedures, while maintaining current ones.
* Be sympathetic to environmental concerns regarding all aspects of the school and grounds.
1. Security and Associated Duties
* Carry out security procedures for school buildings and grounds, including checking doors, windows, fire exits etc., for the purpose of school use, out of school hours functions, maintenance, and emergency services.
* Regularly inspect alarms, fire equipment, and ensure emergency exits are not obstructed.
* Liaise with emergency services including call outs, as required, and report any incidents of theft or vandalism to the Headteacher and/or police.
2. Heating
* Check and control the heating system functions.
* Regularly maintain all parts of the heating system, ensuring appropriate safety requirements are met.
* Report all defects to the Headteacher/Facilities Manager and contact engineers as instructed.
3. Emergencies
* Clean up sickness and other spillages as required.
* Deal with or arrange to deal with bursts, leaks, floods, fires, and breakages, making the area safe as soon as the problem is discovered.
* Handle electrical and gas emergencies, making them safe by turning off the supply.
* Ensure access for emergency services, assist as necessary, and secure the premises as required.
4. Internal Maintenance
* Carry out daily, weekly, monthly, and annual checks of the building and report any defects requiring specialist repair.
* Inspect electrical fittings and plumbing, reporting and repairing defects as appropriate.
* Replace lamps and domestic fuses as required.
* Undertake minor repairs to fixtures and fittings, including desks, tables, and chairs.
* Order and take delivery of materials to deal with repairs.
* Subject to safety regulations, redecorate any area, carry out general and emergency repairs and maintenance (inside and out), including plastering, basic joinery, decorating, and repairs to fixtures, fittings, furnishings, and buildings.
* Remove graffiti as required by the Headteacher.
* Purchase materials for minor repairs.
* Carry out minor works to improve the site as required by the Headteacher and/or OFG.
* Attend appropriate training courses as required.
* Move school furniture as required, adhering to current Health & Safety and Lifting & Handling regulations.
5. External Maintenance
* Maintain the cleanliness and general tidiness of all external hard areas.
* Clean and clear all drains and gullies to ensure effective and healthy operation.
* Inspect the outside fabric of the school, reporting and repairing defects as appropriate.
* Inspect all fences, gates, walls, steps, lights, etc., reporting and repairing defects as appropriate.
