Applications are invited from enthusiastic and motivated State-Registered Biomedical Scientists to join our friendly team in Microbiology as part of the Pathology department.
Main duties of the job
We are seeking an enthusiastic, reliable and conscientious individual with a strong work ethic. The successful candidate will be expected to deliver what is required to achieve a safe, high quality and effective service whilst continuously striving for improvement.
The department has full UKAS ISO15189:2022 accreditation and has IBMS approval for training. The department offers training and development opportunities for the right candidate to further develop their skills and ambitions.
About us
Following a period of training and competency assessments the successful candidate will be expected to participate in early shift, day shift, late shift, on calls, bank holidays and weekend working.

Person Specification
QUALIFICATIONS / TRAINING
Essential
1. Degree in Biomedical science
2. IBMS Specialist postgraduate portfolio in Medical Microbiology
3. State registration with the HCPC
4. Fully trained in all areas of the Microbiology department.
5. Knowledge of the specimen pathways for all samples, including reference laboratory tests
Desirable
1. Will undertake post graduate qualification i.e. (M.Sc.)
2. IBMS Higher Specialist Diploma
KNOWLEDGE, EXPERIENCE & EXPERTISE
Essential
1. Substantial experience as a BMS in clinical microbiology with rotations in serology
2. Supervision and training of Biomedical Support Workers, trainee BMS (Band 5) and Associate practitioner grade staff
3. Good communication and interpersonal skills
4. Experience of working as part of a team
5. Flexible attitude to working hours
6. Active participation in Service Development.
7. Participation in providing out of hours service and working extended days.
8. Demonstrate a commitment to and participation in continued professional development. Create own personal development plan.
9. Experience of training other staff members.
10. Demonstrate a sound knowledge base in laboratory practice in medical Microbiology
11. Ability to run, maintain and fault find on laboratory analysers Good IT skills.
Desirable
1. Experience of working with serology analysers, leading a team, with laboratory computer systems, the pathology IT system to access serology work-files, stock control systems
2. Knowledge and understanding of laboratory accreditation and other quality standards
3. Full involvement in laboratory and clinical audit.
4. Perform personal development review on members of team.
5. Specialist training on analysers, provided by the manufacturers
6. Specialist microbiology training/ experience provided by reference laboratory/ external courses/ examination
7. Willing to develop advanced practitioner skills where relevant
COMMUNICATION AND RELATIONSHIPS (INCLUDING MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITIES)
Essential
1. Willingness to comply with departmental dress code
2. Ability to communicate at all levels both written and verbal with all levels of staff and the customers of the service
3. To be able to deal with sensitive data in accordance with departmental and Trust guidelines
4. To give presentations on results of trials or audit to interested parties in the Trust
