The Innocence Project London is a charity that works pro bono on behalf of convicted individuals who have exhausted the criminal appeals process and are maintaining their innocence, to make applications to the Criminal Cases Review Commission (CCRC). We do not provide legal advice. Students work alongside academics and lawyers to deconstruct claims of innocence to identify a new legal argument or fresh evidence, which are the requirements for the CCRC.
Time commitment: 4-6 hours per month.
Attendance: In person or remote.
Role Description
Lawyers work alongside students to deconstruct innocence claims, identifying case theories and areas for investigation. Lawyers can get as involved as they want to with a case; some get involved in reading documents and analyzing areas for investigation, while others simply support the students in their case theory generating areas for discussion.
Required Skills and Experience
The IPL does not provide legal advice; applications to the CCRC are done so by the consent of the client. Being able to give practical effect to theories is useful, but lawyers do not have to practice in criminal law to work with the IPL.
