Overview
Life is too short to spend it in the wrong job.
If you prefer a hands-on role and have a passion for trains or the railway, we may have just the opportunity for you. GB Railfreight is looking to recruit a Rail Operator in Scotland based at Fort William.
The role is key in supporting the operation of the renowned overnight Caledonian Sleeper service that connects London and Scotland. No shift will be the same, and you will be responsible for getting the trains ready and working with our GB Railfreight Train Managers (drivers) in ensuring all is in place for a timely departure.
Responsibilities
The turnaround from the train’s arrival in the morning to its departure that night with all passengers on board is a surprisingly long and complex process that needs to be overseen by a capable and professional operator. You will manage a number of train movements during your shift, and the engine and carriages need to be checked for defects and faults. Relevant quality control reports need to be completed, ready for the guests to board—your part in ensuring they have the best possible customer experience.
The railway never sleeps, and a lot of the work is done at the oddest of times, from early dawn to late night. The role mirrors that by offering a variable shift pattern, with shifts falling on any day of the week. Quite helpful when wanting to avoid rush hour on your way home (and give a cheeky wave at anyone going to work as you’ve just finished!).
Qualifications
If you’ve never worked in a similar role before, don’t worry; GB Railfreight will provide any and all training required for you to do the job and do it to a high standard. Initial training is a combination of classroom and on-the-job learning, and you will be given full support by an experienced training team.
For your efforts when you are passed competent to undertake the role, you will receive a competitive salary of £38,263 per annum, based on an average 37-hour week. Whilst training, there is a training salary in place until fully competent in the role.
You will also be offered the following:
* Healthcare package – Healthcare cover for a range of operations for you and a partner living at the same address, as well as cover for a number of health care facilities for you and your dependents including consultations, scans, counselling, optical, dental, and therapy treatments.
* Cycle to work scheme – Salary sacrifice scheme for bicycle purchase twice a year.
* Denplan scheme – Salary sacrifice scheme for you and your partner.
* Online Benefits Portal – Offering hundreds of discounts at nationwide retailers.
* Training Platform – Providing you with an online learning facility and the opportunity to develop your career at your leisure.
If you’re sitting there thinking ‘where do I sign up?’, there are only two more questions to answer:
1. Do you live within 45 minutes travel time of Fort William?
2. Do you have a full UK manual driving licence?
If the answer to both of the above questions is ‘yes’, please apply using the ‘apply’ link.
