Student Societies and extracurricular activities are one of the defining features of University life. They offer a range of opportunities to students: to meet and socialise with people of similar interests; to develop personal interests and learn new ones; and develop skills and practical experience in organising events and activities, leading others and managing finances.
The Student Experience Team comprises three areas: Student Activities and Events, Wellbeing, and Welcome Desk. The Student Experience Manager will lead the Student Activities and Welcome Desk Teams, providing strategic and practical oversight to ensure the wide and diverse range of student societies and activities offered at the SU are well executed, inclusive, and engaging. As part of the wider Student Experience Team, the postholder will also offer support in the planning and delivery of larger Wellbeing Events and Campaigns.
The postholder will manage two student activities coordinators and work closely with the Activities Sabbatical Officer. Together, they will continue to create robust systems of training and support around societies, allowing them to understand and comply with the Union's policies and procedures while empowering students to take the lead in creating fun and engaging societies for their members. The postholder will oversee the distribution of student-led grants for society activities, risk assessing activities and events within the role's remit, and working in collaboration with the University, Sports Central, and other SU teams to ensure the smooth running of societies and events across all three Northumbria Campuses.
As well as student-led societies, this role will also lead in the planning and delivery of a program of engaging student events across the year. With the Head of Department and Deputy CEO, the postholder will lead many of our Freshers’ activities and events, including the Freshers Fair, and recruitment and support of Freshers Volunteers who assist with student move-ins and activities during Freshers. To celebrate volunteers, society committees, and members, the SU hosts annual Activities Awards, which the postholder will oversee.
Our Welcome Desk team are the first point of contact for students wanting to set up new societies, finance queries, and room bookings. The postholder will line manage the Welcome Desk Supervisor to ensure student queries are dealt with promptly and professionally and that the space within the Union is effectively managed for a range of purposes.
The Wellbeing Coordinator reports to the Department Head but will work closely with the postholder and team to ensure student wellbeing while at university is at the forefront of everything we do. The postholder will support the Wellbeing Team in the event management of larger campaigns and events. The two teams will collaborate to ensure all society committees benefit from training offered by the wellbeing team, particularly active bystander training, and that societies can take part in and contribute to our work on student wellbeing.
About You
The successful candidate will have experience in managing events of different sizes and understand the process of event design and delivery, including risk assessments. You will be able to support those with less experience to take ownership of their activities, drawing on your insight and experience while designing and delivering their own events for members.
You will ideally have experience working with young adults and an understanding of the barriers that can limit student participation.
You will have experience managing small teams or groups of volunteers and be able to provide clear management, advice, and guidance appropriate to the situation.
You’ll bring enthusiasm to a role that works across the student body and be passionate about the benefits extracurricular activities bring to all students in developing their skills, character, and wellbeing, as a fun, social activity and as an opportunity to make a difference in the lives of others.
As part of the Union’s wellbeing offer to students, we aim to provide mental health first aid training. Although not a requirement for the role, there may be opportunities to be qualified to deliver Mental Health First Aid England courses as a regular activity, subject to agreements with the postholder.
You will have great teamwork skills, able to coordinate closely with staff in other areas so students experience a seamless, single service, actively listen to your colleagues, clearly articulate your team's needs, and understand the role your team plays in achieving key corporate objectives, including elections, freshers, and income generation.
The current corporate plan focuses on student education, community, wellbeing, and employability from 2022 to 2024. The postholder will play a significant role in shaping how those objectives are realized.
