We are looking for a talented Barrister with a civil litigation background to join our civil team.
We are looking for the right person to fit with our team. You will be innovative, creative and forward thinking, in both how you conduct yourself as a barrister and a team member.
We would like for you to have a keen interest in the training and development of others and to ensure working within a team environment working for common goals.
Areas of practices include:
* Personal Injury
* Credit Hire
* Housing Disrepair
* Property Litigation
* Landlord Tenant Issues
* Commercial Litigation
* Contract Disputes
* Probate
* Costs
* To undertake advocacy requirements.
* To undertake drafting tasks as required, such as advices (formal and informal), pleadings and skeleton arguments.
* To keep up to date with procedural changes, case law and developments in legislation.
* To assist less experienced employees with their advocacy and drafting work
* To ensure the provision of a high-quality advocacy service.
* Travel across England and Wales that might require overnight stays.
Housing disrepair, commercial disputes and costs experience is preferred but we are happy to talk to anyone with wider litigation experience.
Main Duties:
* Primarily acting as counsel for clients in general civil litigation claims;
* Represent claimants at trials around England and Wales;
* Undertake representation of the firm’s clients at CMCs/CCMCs;
* Interim Application Hearings;
* IAHs;
* Stage 3 portal Hearings;
* Other forms of advocacy in claimant litigation;
* Draft pleadings for commercial disputes;
* Provide advice on case prospects prior to issue and prior to trial;
* Provide support and guidance for the civil team;
* Draft Injunction Pleadings and attend injunction Hearings; and
* Manage your advocacy diary;
You must be able to work independently and to a high standard, prioritise workloads and have fantastic attention to detail. You will be provided with instructions in a similar way to external counsel as well as assisting generally on matters where necessary. You will be based in Leeds.
You will be part of the civil team, reporting to the Head of the civil department, and joining the team as the firm’s first in-house barrister.
Skills and Experience We Are Looking For:
* Current practising certificate
* Higher Rights of Audience (if applicable)
* Excellent communication and presentation skills.
* Strong knowledge of the Civil Procedure Rules.
* Demonstrable advocacy experience
* Resilience and able to think and perform under pressure to meet strict deadlines.
* Excellent interpersonal skills
* Flexible approach
* Able to act upon own initiative as well as taking direction from management where appropriate.
* Able to work independently where necessary but also as part of a team
* Good IT skills including all Microsoft Office and knowledge of Case Management Systems.
