Job overview
The Upper GI unit is the tertiary service for Warwickshire and provides services for all aspects of Upper GI surgery, including benign hiatal surgery, Upper GI cancer resection and bariatric surgery. Robotic surgery is now undertaken for cancer resections, bariatric and benign Upper GI procedures and the successful applicant would need to demonstrate proficiency and experience in robotic surgery.
The Upper GI cancer service is supported by an excellent MDT. The department of Gastroenterology undertakes EUS, RFA and EMR. The department of Oncology and Radiotherapy have facilities both at UHCW and at satellite units (e.g. George Elliot Hospital). There is a well-established multi-disciplinary tier 3 & tier 4 weight management service working as part of the bariatric MDT.
The new Consultant Upper GI surgeon will undertake elective operating for patients with all types of Upper GI conditions and also general surgical pathology; will provide sub-speciality and general surgical outpatient clinics; provision of Upper GI endoscopy and participation in Upper GI cancer MDT and bariatric MDT.
The successful candidate will be expected to take part in the 1:14 on-call rota for general surgery. UHCW is one of the UK’s busiest trauma centres and the on-call is supported by two SpR grades, 1 CT grade, ACPs and 2 Foundation Doctors. Elective commitments are cancelled for the day of on-call and also the following day to allow for post-take activities.
Main duties of the job
This post will have a weekly outpatient session.
Theatre Sessions
The new consultant will have a regular day case theatre commitment and will be expected to work flexibly within the Upper GI team and the general surgical department, backfilling main theatre lists. Support and mentoring will be provided by the current four substantive Upper GI consultants.
Management and Administrative

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
Upper GI inpatient work is undertaken at University Hospital, Coventry and expansion of day case activity into our sister site at Hospital of Rugby St Cross:
Successful applicant would Facilities include:
Ø Day Surgery Unit (ground floor)
Ø Rugby St Cross Day Surgery Unit
Ø Main Theatre Suite (including 2 Da Vinci Robots with imminent plans for delivery of 3rd Robot)
Ø Surgical Enhanced Care Unit
Typical Upper GI workload includes
Ø Robotic/Laparoscopic complex benign (anti-reflux Surgery/hiatal surgery)
Ø Robotic/Laparoscopic abdominal wall surgery
Ø Robotic/Laparoscopic Bariatric Surgery
Be expected to perform the majority of these procedures independently or with minimal support. The successful candidate should have evidence of extensive experience of minimally invasive (and specifically robotic) surgery which will be assessed during the application process and during the interview. Mentorship from the existing Upper GI Consultants will be provided as necessary.
In addition to the three upper GI surgeons listed above the work of the Upper GI Team is supported by the following junior medical staff:
Ø 6 Middle grades (currently 2 deanery trainees, 2 Post-CCT Fellows, 2 Trust Grades)
Ø 2 Core Trainees
Patients are discussed at a weekly multidisciplinary meeting, and regular joint clinical governance meetings are held.
Secretarial support, office accommodation and IT access/training will be provided.
Weekly departmental educational and management meetings are held every Friday afternoon to which all members of the general surgical team are expected to attend when available. The Upper GI teams runs its own educational session on Tuesday afternoons. There are also monthly clinical governance and audit meetings.
