Purpose of the Role
The Senior Manager of Internal Audit - Operational Audit manages BHFS’s Internal Audit activities to determine the effectiveness and compliance of operational, information systems controls, and special projects. The position reports to the Senior Director of Audit, Risk and Advisory.
Major Functions/Responsibilities
1. The Senior Internal Audit Manager is responsible for the Internal Audit Operational Audit plans, conducting Operational Internal Audits, and issuing the Operational Internal Audit reports. The work includes managing a comprehensive audit program that provides an assurance and consulting services designed to add value and improve the organization’s risk management, control, and governance processes.
Responsibilities include:
2. Developing audit objectives, plans, and scope consistent with the department’s charter, the company’s business objectives, the assessment of audit risk, auditee needs, and the requirement/priorities communicated by the Senior Director of Audit, Risk and Advisory and VP, Internal Audit.
3. Scheduling audits, determining the necessary resources, and seeing that the approved audit plan is executed and accomplished using consultants and guest auditors to staff up the department when needed.
4. Communicating with the appropriate management level regarding the audits, and interfacing with personnel throughout the organization, particularly those being audited, to resolve audit issues and achieve the desired improvement actions.
5. Supervising audits and reviewing the procedures performed to ensure the adequacy of audit scope, testing performed, and the accuracy of conclusions. Audit work will also be required to be reviewed for compliance with policies and procedures and the International Standards for the Professional Practice of Internal Auditing.
6. Supervision is a continuing process, beginning with planning and ending with the conclusion of the audit assignment. Supervision includes:
7. Documenting audit objectives and audit time, providing suitable instructions, and developing the audit program prior to the fieldwork.
8. Reviewing and approving detailed audit programs tailored to each audit to assure that no specific tests or activities necessary for the audit are overlooked and to prevent ineffective audit techniques from being performed. This review process is directed at the particular accomplishment of defined audit objectives.
9. Ensuring that the approved program is adequately and accurately executed.
10. Assessing if the audit objectives are met and/or capturing the gaps accurately.
11. Defining and reviewing the work papers associated with the audit program and supporting the findings.
12. Ensuring that reports are accurate, objective, clear, concise, constructive, and issued in a timely manner. This may include editing audit reports to facilitate recommendations and improvement actions.
13. Facilitating the audit process by resolving issues and staff questions during the day-to-day progress of audits.
14. The extent of supervision will vary depending on the proficiency of auditors and the difficulty of audit assignments. However, evidence of supervision, such as review notes, to-do lists, and the audit work paper review, should be documented and retained.
15. Evaluating auditor performance, providing on-the-job training, and counseling auditors to strengthen the person’s knowledge and skills and focus on improving their development needs.
16. Pursuing professional development opportunities, including external and internal training and professional association memberships, and sharing information gained with co-workers.
17. Contributing to a professional environment as well as developing and maintaining productive auditee, staff, and management relationships through individual contacts and group meetings.
18. Performing related work as assigned by the Senior Director of Audit, Risk and Advisory and VP, Internal Audit.
Qualifications / Certificates
19. 8-10 years of auditing or accounting experience
20. Certified Public Accountant or International equivalent
21. Certified Information Systems Auditor a plus
