Looking for a Civils qualified Project Engineer with Major Civils Project background with on-site construction experience & keen to work for the client, HS2, on a £4bn main works civil engineering contract constructing 80km of:- Viaducts, Earthworks, bridges & green tunnels in preparation for the new high speed railway. Your role will be to ensure that all works meet the project's technical and engineering standards.

Working for the client organisation HS2 reporting to a Senior Project Engineer you will be working on the second largest contract on HS2 – the EKFB (Effiage, Kier, Ferrovial, Bam) Main Works Civils Area Central, working from site offices in Bicester and covering a 25km area from Southam to Greatworth an area characterised by Green tunnels, 7 Viaducts, 13 overbridges, embankments, road diversions & highway realignment.
With the project moving from detailed design into active construction, this is a construction-focused role. The Project Engineer role is responsible for providing professional and technical support on project engineering issues carrying out assurance of asset construction, assuring that it is in accordance with organisational and sponsor requirements, standards and policies.
Primary duties include monitoring the Quality of the site works, witness tests and inspections, check compliance with the Works Information, and ensure the quality of work meets the specified standards, ultimately acting as the client's representative on site. You must have the ability to form working relationships with the main contractor and be confident enough to ask the right questions and represent the client (HS2’s) interests
Context to the Role
Please note the Project Engineer role is not discipline specific but clearly this is a predominately heavy civils sections of works – piling, RC underground structures, RC bridges, retaining walls, green tunnelling, road diversions, excavations, culverts, drainage, highway realignment, and landscape planting and so the candidate must have experience on heavy civils projects and be a qualified civil engineer.
Excellent opportunities to develop to Senior Project Engineer both on this Project programme through to end of 2028 and across the HS2 programme on other main works civils, stations and rail system contracts with another 10 years left on the entire programme of work.
Working Relationship – Co-located & Hybrid
The client team are working alongside the main contractor (Co-located) in the same site offices, the role requires individuals with the correct behaviours – collaboration, engagement, stakeholder management skills who are able to drive the best from the relationship, pick up on problems as they arrive and resolve quickly rather than waiting and reviewing once the problem has manifested.
Role is based from a site office in Bicester coupled with visits to sites across a 25 km area from Southam (north) and Greatworth in the north – expectation is 2 to 3 days on site a week.
Project Engineer £55,000 – 61,140 + Pen 12% + health + 25H (up to £64,197 on approvals)
Duties and responsibilities
* To be responsible for providing technical assurance, as per the HS2 assurance requirements, through production, checking and submission of assurance evidence for technical stage gates;
* To be responsible for assuring that the design and construction of assets comply with the technical and sponsor requirements and applicable standards, specifications and procedures by supporting planned Technical Assurance Reviews and “spot-checks” of Contractor’s deliverables;
* To be accountable for supporting the Head of Engineering and Environment in discharging their duties of NEC3 Supervisor and Principal Designer Representative as mandated within the Construction Design Management (CDM) Regulations 2015;
* To be accountable for communicating the HS2 Engineering requirements to the IPT contractor and provide responses to technical queries;
* To be responsible for providing guidance on design solutions for the asset, promoting use of best practice and innovative engineering techniques, technologies and processes, driving consistency and identifying opportunities for efficiencies within the IPT;
* To be responsible for working alongside other technical specialists to develop appropriate and cost balanced mitigation strategies and solutions, contributing to successful system integration;
* Actively promote and embed Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) in all your work and support and comply with all organisational initiatives, policies and procedures in EDI.
Candidate Criteria
Looking for Qualified Civil Engineer with Major Civil Infrastructure experience and on-site delivery experience. Open to any heavy civils project experience, Highways, Structures, Bridges, Tunnels, Earthworks, Airports, Nuclear, power (RC concrete, Steel, earthwork) etc
Open to candidates from Client, Consultant or Main Contractors. Also open to people working in a range of engineering roles – Project Engineers (P.E, Snr Project Engineer) or technical Sub Agent / Agent / Design Managers, Technical Engineering Assurance Managers & especially NEC Supervisors.
The candidate will have excellent communication, collaboration and engagement skills and comfortable working alongside the main contractors in the integrated project teams.
Should of a strong grasp of CDM, understand constructability and how things should be safely built on site with a keen eye for detail and Quality
