Role Introduction
Are you looking for a new challenge working in an alternative healthcare setting? We deliver transformational models of forensic, physical and mental healthcare into police custody suites.
Police Custody Healthcare professionals play a pivotal role assisting the criminal justice system. We believe we can make a real difference to those with vulnerabilities and healthcare needs whilst being able to support the police by obtaining evidential samples. We care for some of the most vulnerable people in society who are taken into custody suites. Operating with independence and autonomy, your actions can be lifesaving when you consider the physical and mental challenges of people who often have a high dependency on drugs and alcohol and exhibit difficult behaviours.
Maintaining detailed and accurate records to ensure the health, safety and welfare of detained persons held in police custody is paramount.
Role Involvement
This will include:
1. Conducting clinical assessments to identify if patients are fit to be detained in custody.
2. Continued provision of care identified during assessment including the management of long-term conditions, minor illness and injuries, and emergency treatment.
3. Mental health and substance misuse assessments and management.
4. Forensic sampling including road traffic offence bloods.
5. Providing substance misuse therapies whilst in custody.
6. Referrals and signposting to support wider vulnerabilities.
7. Collaborative working, onward referrals and signposting to external agencies.
8. Maintaining detailed and accurate records to ensure the health, safety and welfare of detained persons held in police custody.
You may be requested to obtain forensic samples and assessments for fitness to be detained/interviewed in a community setting which may include hospitals and patient homes.
Skills and Experience
If you're a highly motivated and enthusiastic individual, with a background and professional registration as either a nurse or a paramedic, we want to hear from you. (RMN’s must also have relevant physical assessment experience).
The UK Association of Forensic Nursing recommends a minimum of 3-4 years’ experience post-registration. We also welcome advanced skills including non-medical prescribing.
You'll have extensive experience of working in a relevant specialty, such as General Practice, A&E, walk-in centre, substance misuse services, prison healthcare or mental health liaison service in an A&E.
This is an autonomous role where you will need to be confident with your clinical skills, emergency response, and decision-making as you will be working independently, and your actions can be lifesaving.
You need to be flexible to deal with a wide variety of presenting conditions and situations and be able to work under pressure in a challenging and fast-paced environment.
As you'll be working collaboratively with other organisations within your suites (Police, Liaison and Diversion, drug services, etc.) as well as colleagues across the region, highly effective communication and documentation skills are a must.
Full training will be provided along with an ongoing development and support program tailored to the individual's needs. We actively encourage ongoing professional development within the service remit.
This role requires full police vetting, and it is essential that you can travel independently across the area and have access to a suitable vehicle for business purposes.
