Job Description:
An opportunity has arisen for a Project Engineering Manager to lead & coordinate the Test Solution Design, Development and Delivery activities across multiple Advanced Targeting programmes within the Radar & Advanced Targeting Line of Business in Edinburgh.
This role requires strong leadership skills, clear thinking with a proven ability to identify and prioritise key issues during Design, Development & Delivery of complex Test Solutions.
As part of the Test Solutions Design Team, this role is Edinburgh based offering hybrid working. Reporting on a day-to-day basis is to the Head of Engineering Projects based in Edinburgh.
Key Responsibility Areas
1. Initially required to establish and prioritise forward load requirements and expand on the current multi-discipline team of permanent staff and outsourced resource, as required, to translate requirements into test strategies, implementation plans and final delivered solutions.
2. Day-to-day management of the team under your responsibility, ensuring that roles and tasks are clearly defined, understood and delivered.
3. Management of the Test Solutions Engineering technical quality, schedule and budget.
4. Understand and interpret user needs / requirements in order to influence and define the system requirements, architecture, and design, liaising with the various prime equipment teams.
5. Establish and maintain good lines of communication across the Engineering IPTs and upwards to the Head of Engineering Projects.
6. Management of cost adherence to the Programme budgets. Work Package cost management for project control and reporting.
7. Liaise closely with the System Design Authority to ensure technical integrity of programmes.
8. Technical point of contact and liaison.
9. Technical interface and management of Programme contractors & sub-contractors.
10. Setting of goals, appraisal of core staff and agreeing project specific training needs.
11. Configure and maintain performance measures and matrices for the Test Solutions area.
12. Identify performance improvements / key enablers and propose candidate solutions and implementation methods.
13. Travel within the UK, and potentially worldwide, to meet with our customers and industry partners.
Skills, Qualifications & Knowledge Required
1. Degree qualified in a relevant Science / Technology / Engineering / Maths discipline or similar experience.
2. Good knowledge of Test Solutions in a high tech environment, utilising common systems (where appropriate) to develop an end to end solution.
3. Experience of engineering team management in a challenging environment.
4. Good problem solving ability.
5. Good schedule and budget control.
6. Good written and verbal communication skills.
7. Commercial awareness.
8. Ability to develop close relationships with key internal and external stakeholders to understand, interpret, and influence current and future user needs and requirements.
9. Strong leadership competency but also can demonstrate team-working skills.
10. Enthusiasm to take on new challenges.
11. A passion for knowledge sharing and developing others.
Skills, Qualifications & Knowledge that would be Desirable
1. Proven technical expertise and management on Defence programmes and full knowledge and experience of other related disciplines.
2. Understanding of financial management and impacts on programmes.
3. Experience in a "customer facing" role.
4. Experience of interaction with senior external personnel on significant engineering matters often requiring coordination between organisations.
