The role
Applications are welcomed for the role of Senior Product Developer to lead a professional, dynamic and forward-thinking group of product developers within our Product Management team.
The CITB Product Management Team is responsible for many key CITB products for the construction industry, including a successful suite of health & safety training courses, examinations, accompanying publications and health and safety tests. It is important that these are aligned to industry needs, have maximum impact, and continue to develop as the industry and technologies evolve. These products are aimed at operatives through to senior managers, supporting them with the skills needed to progress through the industry.
The role holder will be responsible for a small team of Product Developers project-managing the development of new and existing products, to ensure that these meet the requirements of CITB’s strategic objectives and the needs of industry. You will support the wider business, by maintaining a consistent approach to quality and delivery.
You will be responsible for establishing processes and best practice within the team and setting consistent standards for Product Development across the wider Product Management department. Communicating with stakeholders and managing product development groups are key elements of this role, so advanced written and verbal skills are essential.
The ideal candidate for this role will have a proven track record in project management, preferably in a product environment. You will have developed products in collaboration with other developers, and will be a skilled collaborator and innovator, with experience of working with multiple internal and external stakeholders. A construction industry background is not essential.
Key activities
You will:
line manage a small team of Product Developers, with the responsibility of overseeing all development work undertaken for new and existing products.
continuously monitor and maintain processes, both developmental and operational, to ensure that all projects are managed with consistency and meet project requirements. You will be responsible for embedding these processes and for robust project governance.
work with the Product Development Manager and other senior developers to recruit and assign resources to projects as required and take on horizontal team management responsibilities.
build and maintain key relationships with external and internal stakeholders as required for product development, managing contracts and payments as required. Organise and facilitate product focus groups and ongoing development groups to shape new product development as appropriate with both industry and suppliers.
provide leadership and guidance to development teams in other product areas to ensure consistency across CITB.
have your own workload of projects to manage, including:
Development of detailed project plans with clearly identified objectives, timelines, risks and issues.
Effective management of project delivery on an ongoing basis, including monitoring and reporting on progress, managing timescales, budget and quality, and proactively managing risks and issues.
Design, allocate and manage work packages to internal and external experts.
Conduct post-project reviews (such as lessons learnt) and highlight any potential future improvements.
Ensure that all projects are sufficiently resourced, and that timelines for completion are both reasonable and aligned to the product release cycle.
Management of project budgets to meet governance requirements.
About you
Key attributes for this role.
Experience of delivering multiple projects in a commercial environment, demonstrating strong project governance.
Project Management professional qualification such as APM (PMQ) or Prince2.
Clear, confident and persuasive communicator and presenter at appropriate levels, as stakeholder management is key to this role.
Strong problem-solving skills, with the ability to influence and negotiate both internally and externally.
Experience in line management and cross-leadership responsibilities.
Strong written and verbal competence.
Process analysis/design experience in relation to product development.
Self-motivated, and able to plan and organise own workload and that of the team whilst allowing for autonomy.
Experience of developing products or content in the training or education sector.

The post is a Specialist Contributor L4 position with an expected starting salary of £45,000 - £48,500.
Hybrid working from home and head office in Peterborough available with approx. one day in the office per fortnight (STC).
