Locum Consultant Psychiatrist - Townsend Court
We are seeking to recruit a Locum Consultant Psychiatrist to join our excellent MDT on Townsend ward, a 19 bed female acute ward, in Houghton Regis, south Bedfordshire. The post will be initially available for 12 months, with the potential for further renewal subject to service needs and assessment of the post-holder's performance.
You will provide consultant clinical leadership for the ward, and will be well supported by a specialty doctor and 2 Trust-employed resident doctors, alongside an excellent and well-functioning MDT including Matron, Ward Manager, and an excellent nursing team with full-time support from OT and Psychology.
The ward has a turnover of approximately 15 patients per month, with an average length of stay of approximately 40 days. The patient caseload of Townsend Ward is predominantly made up of acute presentations of psychosis, mood disorders, personality disorders, and other mental health conditions.
Main duties of the job
The post-holder will:
1. Provide consultant leadership to the multidisciplinary ward team
2. Provide comprehensive assessment, diagnosis, treatment, and management of the mental and physical health for 11 acutely ill adult female inpatients
3. Carry out all Responsible Clinician's duties for those patients detained under the Mental Health Act 1983, maintaining all care planning in line with legal requirements. These duties will include assessing patients under the Mental Health Act, capacity assessments, consent to treatment, tribunal report writing, attending Mental Health Act Review Tribunals and Managers' Hearings, granting Sec 17 leave, revoking CTOs, recommending CTOs, etc.
4. Assume clinical responsibility for adult patients with mental illness admitted acutely from community services (All admissions will be gate-kept by the Crisis Resolution/Home Treatment team)
5. Undertake all work in the context of the recovery approach, which is emphasised across the Trust, placing the service user at the centre of care planning and decision making
6. Attend the ward on a daily basis to review patients, enable facilitation of the care program approach, and involve carers when appropriate at each stage of the inpatient stay.
7. Provide support and training to other health care professionals and support service users through the care pathway as required whilst working with other teams in the community setting

QUALIFICATIONS
Essential
1. Fully registered with the General Medical Council
2. Eligible for inclusion in the GMC Specialist Register (or Specialist Registrar within 6 months of gaining CCT at time of interview).
3. Membership or Fellowship of the Royal College of Psychiatrists or equivalent qualification (in accordance with Royal College of Psychiatrists guidelines)
4. Eligible for Section 12 Approval (Mental Health Act)/ Approved Clinician or willing to apply for such approval once in post
Desirable
1. A higher degree such as MD or PhD
KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE
Essential
1. Experience of clinical work in Acute Adult Psychiatry at SpR, SASG or consultant level within the last 3 years
2. Excellent working knowledge and experience of the application of the Mental Health Act
3. Appreciation and understanding of ethnic minority issues and a commitment to developing culturally sensitive practices
4. Understanding of social factors relevant to psychiatry
5. Robust experience of working with severe and enduring mental illness and risk assessment, management
Desirable
1. Experience of service development and introducing new services in mental health
2. Experience of working at consultant level in an inpatient environment.
