Under the direction of the Chief Echo Technologist this person performs services utilizing diagnostic ultrasound equipment specifically of cardiac structures.
Position: Echocardiogram Technician
Department: Cardiovascular
Schedule: 24 hours, 3 days per week. No nights, no weekends, no call, no holidays.

Responsibilities:
1. Performs and initially interprets Cardiac Echo Studies including Two-Dimensional Echo, Doppler, Contrast Studies, Trans-Esophageal, Stress Echo and Dobutamine Stress Echo, Intra-Operative Studies, Valvuloplasties in Cath Lab, and Research Studies.
2. Communicates with different areas of the Cardiology Department, other hospital departments, and Echo Lab to facilitate delivery of service.
3. Performs echocardiograms at a technical level not requiring constant supervision.
4. Provides superior customer service to internal and external clients, customers, and patients.
5. Assists cardiology fellows and nurses during special echo procedures.
6. Recognizes and acts upon abnormal echo results requiring immediate response.
7. Assists in scheduling special echo procedures and arrange for all necessary personnel.
8. Data entry of echo results, generating formal reports, and dispersal of reports to referring physicians and patient floors.
9. Maintains logs of all patients studied and enters all patient data into the computer.
10. Prepares material for weekly echocardiography conference, Grand Rounds, and other instructional situations.
11. Participates in research studies.
12. Assists in training cardiology fellows in echo technique.
13. Maintains and properly cleans all echo equipment; i.e., probe filters, etc.
Non-Essential Functions:
1. Maintains a clean and orderly environment in labs. Restocks supplies and laundry daily.
2. Arranges for patients to be transported to and from lab. When necessary, returns patient to the floor.
3. Ensures the safety and comfort of all patients in the lab.
4. Properly routes data-processing charge tickets.
5. Communicates effectively with staff, in the Labs, Department and in other hospital areas and physician offices.
6. Answers phones, echo results, scheduling, transport, confer with physicians.
7. Cross-trains to the exercise lab.
8. Applies loop monitors.
9. Performs EKG's, vital signs and phlebotomy.
Qualifications:
1. Minimum Education: College degree or prior medical background (Nursing, X-Ray) plus 2 years classroom and at least 1600 hours hands-on experience.
2. Minimum Experience: 2-5 years experience performing Echocardiograms and 2 years experience in a hospital-based echo lab.
3. Highly trained in Echocardiography, with strong knowledge of anatomy, physiology, and disease process.
4. Minimum skills/abilities: Basic computer knowledge, and some typing skills; Basic sterile techniques; Strong interpersonal and communication skills; Ability to work independently.
5. Certification/Licensure: Certification by the Registry of Diagnostic Cardiac Sonographers or registry eligible.
6. Training: A minimum of 2 years hands-on echo experience in a hospital-based lab, must have performed trans-thoracic echo studies with doppler and color doppler, exercise and dobutamine stress echo tests, and must have assisted with transesophageal echos.
