As a principal building inspector, you will join a committed team of professionals to ensure the highest possible standards of building control enforcement permissible within the scope of the building control policy. Providing a proactive enabling approach to the functions within the Building Control unit, ensuring statutory obligations enabling the Council to fulfil obligations under Section 91 of the Building Act 1984.
Our principal inspectors whilst embracing change within the profession undertake specialist or technical assessments/activities and make decision based on those assessments within the building control service, using skills that have been gained through professional qualifications, relevant vocational training and practical work experience. The post holder will be required to undertake licensed building regulation activities and to work without supervision on domestic and commercial projects whilst supporting others.

We are therefore now looking for a dedicated, ambitious registered building inspector who would like to extend their skills, operating as a principal officer.
With the emphasis on team approach, our principal officers work closely with others within the team whilst taking a lead role in some of the more complex developments within the area requiring a confident, robust professional approach. Although enjoying the support from the manager and team leader, the position will provide a high degree of autonomy to help further improve the service preparing for a successful future.
Key responsibilities would include –
- Managing a caseload of development sites through inspection, ensuring compliance with legislative requirements
- To play a significant role in the development and support for other staff within the team, particularly on technical matters. Providing tutorial advice based on the ability of others.
- Participate within investigations of non-compliance, taking a lead role in the development of enforcement cases.
- To a proactive positive approach to engagement with users of the service and those who may become future users of the service.
- To respond to report of dangerous structures, carrying our actions and enforcement as required.
To fulfil the requirements for this role we would expect you to have –
- At least 5 years’ experience working within a building control environment.
- Registered at a level Class 2D with the building safety regulator.
- Have a good knowledge of how legislation fits with day-to-day activities
- Hold chartered membership of a relevant profession such as CABE, CIOB etc.
- Be comfortable using technologic solutions.
- Have flexibility in your approach.
