6 months contract with a Local Authority
Job Summary:
· This is an exciting opportunity to help scope and deliver new written content telling the weather story for our partners and channels.
· We are looking for a writer / journalist ideally who may have written science experience or a broadcast meteorologist who can write well and at pace.
· We are hoping the successful candidate can work alongside the team in Exeter part time.
Key Duties/Accountabilities
· We are looking for a science journalist, a writer, or meteorologist who can write well, who can help us increase the amount, reach and engagement of our written weather content across our direct channels and with partners.
· You will help us to scope, test and deliver our daily written weather offer and look for opportunities to increase its reach and impact within the media and public.
· Deliver timely and inspirational daily written content in line with the weather story and wider relevant news context, whilst maintaining the Met Office’s reputation for science and accuracy.
· Look for opportunities to sell in weather stories to the wider news, aligning with press office priorities.
· Develop scripts, narratives, blogs, web pages and other digital content, including social media, in collaboration with content producers, presenters, press officers etc, helping to ensure that all Met Office written communications contribute to our consistent voice and brand.
· Create and develop meaningful internal and external contacts, to source stories and gain increased uptake across the media and appropriate channels.
· Working with others, help to scope our future daily written weather offer, so it has maximum reach, engagement and impact.
Essential Experience Required:
· Experience and understanding of the news media, publishing and social landscape is essential.
· Experience of developing engaging online, social media, or news content to successfully deliver increased reach and engagement is essential.
· Experience of communicating complex subjects such as meteorology, to a public audience is essential.
Essential Qualification Required:
· General education qualification is essential.
Additional information to note:
· Working hours: 37 hours a week.
· SC Clearance is required for this role.
· The role is full time but may consider part time (perhaps a job share of some sort). We work in a flexible/hybrid way but would ideally like someone who can come into Exeter fairly regularly (1-2 per week ideally).
· This position has been confirmed for 6 months with a view to extend up to 12months. It is likely that a full-time and permanent position will become available in the future
