Paralegal - Abuse Team
Salary: £23,890 + Excellent Benefits
Location: Manchester – (Hybrid)

Simpson Millar is looking for an experienced (preferably) Paralegal to assist fee earners with existing caseloads dealing with claims on behalf of Claimants for sexual and physical abuse as well as claims against care providers, alleging failure to care/negligence with particular issues surrounding Limitation as well as claims to the Criminal Injuries Compensation Authority.
You will be assisting fee earners on litigated and non-litigated multi-track cases. Previous experience in abuse work would be preferred but is not essential. You will be joining an experienced team where you will have the opportunity to gain experience and progress within the business.
Importantly, you’ll have an empathetic nature in order to deal with the type of work and injury that our clients have suffered. Some understanding of serious injury/multi-track PI would be beneficial, but crucially, someone who has an eye for detail who can balance the case work and will build relationships with the clients.
As an Abuse Paralegal you will:
1. Assist the fee earners to conduct a caseload of matters on behalf of clients as directed and in accordance with the Firm’s file management and supervisory policy.
2. Maintain a diary and bring up entries in accordance with the firm procedures.
3. Work with a case management system, databases, and normal office IT systems, including the firm’s HR, L&D, and recruitment tool.
4. Participate in the development, marketing, and success of the Abuse department.
So what experience and qualities are we looking for:
1. Experience in abuse compensation would be preferred, but areas such as Industrial Disease and/or clinical negligence would be relevant.
2. Have an understanding of the Civil Procedure Rules and protocols.
3. Experience in dealing with Civil Legal Aid applications and some knowledge of Legal Aid would assist, though is not essential.
4. Emotional balance and strength.
5. Empathy with the victims of abuse is essential.
6. A strong sense of justice.
7. A friendly and co-operative approach to clients and colleagues/department members.
8. An interest and enthusiasm for business development and marketing.
9. Knowledge and understanding of Personal Injury work and the law of Limitation.
10. Excellent IT skills.
11. Good knowledge and understanding of procedures and protocol.
