The Company:
Barnes Construction is the largest division of The Barnes Group Limited and offers a comprehensive professional construction service. Since the Company was formed in 1978, we have established ourselves as a client-focused building contractor, completing various projects for blue chip and repeat business clients. Whilst our Head Office is based in Ipswich, we operate throughout the UK on a wide range of projects, mainly within the Health, Leisure, Education, Retail and Commercial sectors.
We are looking to recruit a full-time Trainee Buyer to join our friendly Buying Department.
The Buyers are responsible for procuring materials required for the construction of our projects, to meet design details and specifications provided, and working within our financial allowances. The successful candidate will be working as part of a broader delivery team and ensure that all of our projects are kept on programme and budget.
Reporting to: Chief Buyer, Divisional Surveying Director
Location: Barnes Construction Ipswich Head Office (in person)
Contract type: Full time, Permanent
Schedule: 39 hours per week (Monday – Friday)
Duties and Responsibilities:
* Assisting with securing material quotations for use in our tenders.
* Quantifying material requirements.
* Compiling enquiries to suppliers.
* Undertaking comparisons of quotes received, ensuring best value and specification compliance.
* Preparing and raising orders to suppliers.
* Verification of delivery tickets and approval of invoices.
* Carrying out any other duties as instructed by the Chief Buyer.
Skills required:
* Prior experience of the construction industry is not required as full training will be provided.
* Good GCSE passes (grade 4 or above), have or expect to obtain A level passes or equivalent vocational qualifications and keen to work towards further qualifications.
* Computer literate, particularly in Word and Excel. Training in construction specific software will be provided.
* Excellent written and verbal communication skills, maintaining a polite, helpful attitude with various stakeholders at all levels.
* Confident in your ability to work on your own as well as part of a team.
Training:
The successful candidate will be enrolled onto a college based, day release further education course, likely to be a Higher National Certificate in Construction Management or similar at either Suffolk New College or West Suffolk College. The training will be fully funded by the Company.
The duties of the position will vary from time to time as a result of new initiatives, new or amended employment legislation, changes in technology, policy changes or re-structuring. In these cases, appropriate training may be given to enable the post holder to undertake any new/varied work.
The successful candidate must have the right to work in the UK.

Start date: We are flexible with the commencement date to suit individual preferences, with either immediate start, or to align with the completion of current academic studies and this will be discussed at the interview stage.
