An opportunity is available for a DSO (Distribution System Operator) Policy Engineer. Reporting to the Senior DSO Policy Engineer, the successful candidate will be responsible for delivering internal and external governance documents for the DSO and its interactions with the DNO (Distribution Network Operator) and the wider industry. This will involve the development, maintenance, and review of company directives in the DSO series (and others) covering the whole policy lifecycle, including concept development, process mapping, formal drafting, consultation, issue and review. This will include both independent policy development and working with SMEs from DSO and across NGED (National Grid Electricity Distribution) to map their processes and translate their requirements into Policy Directives, Standard Techniques and Specifications. The role will preferably be based at one of our offices in Castle Donington, Bristol, Cardiff or Tipton, however other locations will be considered and hybrid working will be available. We would expect you to come in to the office a minimum of 2 days per week as well as for any in-person meetings. Please note the successful candidate may initially be appointed at a lower salary until all relevant courses and training are complete. Main Responsibilities Delivery of new and revised directives in the DSO series and other related series, both individually and in collaboration with authors and subject-matter experts from across NGED Proactively supporting the target staff group of each policy to ensure that they understand what is required by the policy and to help resolve any issues they encounter in applying the policy Working with colleagues in the DSO Strategy, Regulation & Governance team to feed into regulatory submissions such as the DSO Performance Panel report Representing the DSO on Code working groups, in collaboration with other DSOs, and at other cross-industry groups Dissemination of governance documents to DSO staff, DNO staff, and external stakeholders. This will include development and delivery of formal training courses, presentations, workshops, Q&As, and ongoing ad-hoc support Development, maintenance and update of systems and datasets that support the delivery and application of governance documents. This will include the DSO Glossary and DSO Policy's work planning system Contribution to technical codes, DSO best practice and other industry governance as required in collaboration NGED Regulatory colleagues and counterparts from other DSOs and other parts of the industry Process mapping - including mapping current processes and designing improved processes The Ideal CandidateWe are looking for someone who has good general engineering knowledge and is familiar with electricity distribution. It would be beneficial to have knowledge/experience of the planning, design and operation of NGED's electricity distribution system or the ability to build this knowledge quickly. You should have excellent interpersonal and communication skills and be self-motivated, with the ability to work independently as part of a wider programme of work. Experience in writing technical/process requirements in a clear and concise manner ensuring it is accessible to stakeholders at all levels is key, as is experience in delivering written governance and/or training courses. Ideally you will hold a minimum of a HNC in an Engineering or related STEM subject. A specialism in power engineering would be preferred either by qualification or professional experience. The role requires some travel and therefore a full and valid UK driving licence is desirable. Please note interviews will be held week commencing 20 January 2025.
