A leading defence business is currently recruiting for a Trade / Export Compliance Officer based in the Edinburgh area on a full-time permanent basis (hybrid working, 1-2 days onsite per week).
Role: Trade Compliance Officer / Export Compliance Officer

Location: Edinburgh (hybrid working, 1-2 days onsite per week)
Salary: £45,000-£60,000 (DOE) + benefits
Key Responsibilities:
1. Ensure accurate record-keeping in line with company procedures to comply with HMRC and DBT regulations.
2. Manage the re-export of imported goods under Customs control to discharge financial liabilities.
3. Collaborate with project teams to ensure Export Control and Trade Compliance requirements for equipment, technology, and data are met in accordance with UK and international export authorisations.
4. Provide support and preparation for both internal and external audits relating to Export Control and Trade Compliance.
5. Advise project teams on compliance with UK Export Control laws and internal policies, including identifying suitable export licences and securing necessary authorisations such as MOD Form 680s and End User Undertakings.
6. Submit and manage export licence applications via SPIRE to the UK Department for Business & Trade's Export Control Joint Unit (DBT-ECJU).
7. Handle MOD Form 680 applications and liaise with the MoD to obtain required approvals.
8. Offer expert advice to ensure Commodity List Classifications and Export Control Ratings are accurate and in place.
9. Guide Integrated Project Teams (IPTs) on licensing and customs issues, ensuring compliance is embedded throughout project delivery.
10. Apply technical expertise to support planning and management of export licensing and customs matters.
11. Ensure proper handling of imports in accordance with Customs Authorisations, including accurate record-keeping and timely import clearance instructions to freight agents.
12. Manage export documentation and clearance, assigning correct export licences and customs procedures in the business systems (e.g. SAP).
13. Support export processes by providing timely and accurate documentation and instructions to shipping teams.
Key Skills and Experience:
1. Proven experience within a Trade / Export Compliance related role, Aerospace/Defence sector is preferred.
2. Highly experienced with both UK & US export regulations (ITAR, EAR).
3. Strong interpersonal and influencing skills to support decision making based on knowledge of international trade.
4. Eligibility to gain UK SC clearance.
