Job summary
An exciting opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic, HCPC registered Biomedical Scientists, to join our friendly team at The Royal Shrewsbury Hospital (RSH).
This is a 2-year fixed term post available in Haematology/Blood Transfusion. Staff routinely work at a single base but will be required to work at either of our alternative sites, The Princess Royal Hospital, Telford, or The Robert Jones and Agnes Hunt Hospital, Oswestry. Suitably qualified trainees will be considered for a Band 5 post.
The Haematology and Blood Transfusion Departments are looking to appoint two Biomedical Scientists, to assist with the provision of a diagnostic service and support the delivery of a 24 hour per day, 7 days per week service as part of a 37.5 hour working week - including evenings, nights, weekends and bank/public holidays. These fixed term posts are being funded to support rapid Haematology results and blood film review.
Main duties of the job
* Assist in the provision of a diagnostic service.
* Understand, organise and perform competently a range of laboratory procedures, either singly or as part of a team, that equate to the training and qualifications of a Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) registered BMS.
* Participate in the provision of the out of hour's service either as a lone worker or as a team leader.
About us
The Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital (SaTH) Pathology Services are accredited to UKAS standards.
The Haematology section is equipped with Sysmex analysers. Automated Biorad Equipment is in use in the Blood Transfusion Department.
The departments are approved IBMS/HCPC training laboratory and continuous professional development is actively encouraged.
Person Specification
Qualifications
Essential
* BSc(Hons) in Biomedical Sciences (IBMS approved) or equivalent
* Registered with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC)
* Evidence of Continuing Professional Development (CPD)
* IBMS Specialist Diploma in Haematology & Blood Transfusion
Desirable
* Membership of the Institute of Biomedical Science or equivalent professional body.
* IBMS Multi-Disciplinary Diploma or equivalent qualification e.g. BBTS Specialist Certificate
Experience
Essential
* Substantial experience of Biomedical procedures in Haematology and Blood Transfusion gained through working in an NHS environment
* Experience of Out of Hours/Shift working
* Experience of working unsupervised, within scope of practice
Desirable
* Experience of supervising junior staff and students.
* Experience of using instrumentation used in the department, or similar.
* Experience of using Pathology IT systems and Quality management software.
Knowledge
Essential
* Working knowledge of Microsoft software in particular Word and Excel.
* Theoretical knowledge of Biomedical procedures
* Knowledge of Quality Management Systems and Quality Assurance
* Knowledge of Laboratory accreditation and compliance.
Desirable
* Health and Safety knowledge
