Responsibilities:
1. Responsible for ensuring that refuse/recycling material collections are completed effectively and to the required standard, thereby minimizing missed collections.
2. Comply with safe working practices in the accomplishment of the collection service both on the highway and within the disposal site.
3. Ensure that the vehicle is safe to take onto the highway, undertaking daily routine checks of the vehicle as set down in Shorts procedures. Complete daily drivers PDA, highlighting any mechanical defect that has occurred during the working day.
4. Assist (when available) in the loading of refuse and recycling vehicles.
5. Collect refuse/recycling material in a safe manner to minimize disruption to the public/other road users. Report no collections where no refuse is presented for collection.
6. Unload the vehicle at the designated disposal point, retaining weighbridge tickets for return to office-based staff at base Depot.
7. Drive in a safe and courteous manner, ensuring that the loaders are carried safely within the cab, obeying traffic regulations and speed restrictions, and not overloading the vehicle.
8. Ensure that the vehicle is left in a clean state at the end of the working day with all refuse offloaded unless permission has been granted.
9. Assist where trained to act as a reversing assistant in line with Shorts Safe Working Procedure.
10. Learn the route planning and identify where bin locations are.
11. Carry out the work in accordance with the Company’s procedures in a safe manner with regard for members of the public and other staff.
12. Familiarize yourself with all relevant Safe Methods of Operation related to the tasks assigned and implement them accordingly.
13. Be responsible for ensuring that the vehicle has a hard hat, extinguisher, and first aid kit available each working day and report any missing/defective items to your Supervisor/Manager.
14. Complete all assigned duties to the satisfaction of the Waste Service Manager.
15. Report all bins not presented, contamination, side refuse, and overloaded bins to the Supervisor/Manager at the earliest opportunity.
16. Report broken or damaged bins found on the rounds.
17. Familiarize yourself and comply with all Site Safety Instructions relating to all Landfill sites, waste transfer stations, and Recycling sites.
18. Assist in the delivery of leaflets/sacks, etc., when directed.
19. Comply fully with Shorts group Health and Safety policy.
