An opportunity has arisen for a dedicated and motivated pharmacist to join the Cancer Services Pharmacy Team at Leeds Teaching Hospitals as an Advanced Clinical Pharmacist in Haematology.
As a tertiary specialist centre we support the care of patients with a wide variety of haematological malignancies in both Leeds and the wider Yorkshire area. We are a vital part of the multi-disciplinary team looking after specialist groups of patients at all stages of their treatment.
Haematology or cancer related experience is not an essential criteria for this role. We are looking for someone who is able to manage a dynamic and changing workload to ensure a safe, efficient, effective and positive service for our haematology patients.
Full training would be provided to the new post holder as well as support to attain a competency in the validation of haematology related systemic anti-cancer therapy (SACT) utilising our comprehensive and structured SACT training programme.
Main duties of the job
1. Provide an advanced clinical pharmacy service to our haematology inpatient wards.
2. Validation and supply of Systemic Anti Cancer Therapy (SACT) for patients attending the Leeds Cancer Centre.
3. Attend multi-disciplinary team meetings where necessary.
4. Work closely with pharmaceutical industry representatives to ensure specialist haematology medicines are available for patients when and where they need them.
5. Undertake patient counselling for haematology patients to ensure maximum benefit from medicines supplied.
6. Liaise with drug & therapeutics, medicines safety, informatics and procurement teams to facilitate the implementation of new products to the haematology portfolio (including free of charge/compassionate use schemes).
7. Review prospective clinical trials for suitability prior to implementation in the haematology portfolio.
8. Contribute to the oversight of ongoing clinical trials within your area of practice, including reviewing and implementing clinical amendments and safety updates.
9. Utilise the ChemoCare prescribing system to create templates and protocols for new drugs in haematology.
10. Undertake required audits and reviews to ensure the clinical pharmacy service is operating within the required specification and adhering to national standards.
11. Provide training/supervision/line management to colleagues in the cancer team.
12. Develop and maintain existing links with haematology colleagues around the region to ensure best practice.

The haematology pharmacy team work together on a daily basis to ensure that some of our most complex and challenging treatments within Leeds Teaching Hospitals are delivered safely, efficiently and in a patient centered manner. Our team is made up of some highly experienced pharmacists who have strong working relationships with the wider multi-disciplinary team. Clinical
1. Lead the highly specialised clinical pharmacy service to patients and the multidisciplinary team within a given clinical speciality.
2. Support the Trust's Prescribing Standards and challenge practice where prescribers have not adhered to the Medicines Code.
3. Demonstrate the ability to provide safe, clinically effective and cost-effective use of medicines in accordance with Trust policy, standard operating procedures and medicine legislation. This will include individual prescription review to optimise therapy, advising on dosage and side effects and on safe administration of medicines. The post holder is expected to determine how the outcomes are best achieved in specific circumstances.
4. Pharmacists who are registered as prescribers will, with the agreement of the clinical director of the speciality, prescribe within their level of competence, to support patient care.
5. Plan, manage, monitor and review individual patient care plans.
6. Participate in consultant ward rounds and multi-disciplinary team meetings.
7. Manage difficult and ambiguous problems, often when information is limited.
8. Undertake risk management, including investigating clinical incidents in the clinical area and ensuring compliance with medicine legislation.
9. The post holder will be expected to identify, where necessary, areas that require service changes and develop a strategy to carry out the change through consultation with senior colleagues within and outside the pharmacy.
10. Manage the introduction of new drugs, including unlicensed drugs, into the clinical speciality.
11. Manage the clinical pharmacist input into clinical trials.
12. Develop and update policies for the safe, effective and economic use of medicines through discussion with medical and nursing staff.
13. Communication with Primary Care about medicines policies or guidelines specific for their area of practice.
Management
1. Monitor and interpret expenditure on medicines within own clinical speciality. Provide the Directorate with regular reports to assist in the management of the drug budget.
2. Attend the monthly Clinical Speciality Management meetings to advise on medicine use and financial implications.
3. Horizon scan for new drugs and advise the clinical speciality meetings on the financial implications.
4. Co-ordinate Medicines Use Savings Projects.
5. Review prescribing data from out-patient clinics.
6. Write or respond to business cases for service development to secure additional funding.
7. Responsible for day to day supervision / management of specialist clinical pharmacists in clinical speciality (some staff).
Research and Education
1. Occasionally participates in research and development within clinical speciality.
2. Undertakes own research/audit within clinical speciality.
3. Supervise, teach, and assess junior pharmacy staff completing training modules within the clinical area. This input varies, mostly based on the experience of the post holder, and will typically include:
4. Acting as a trainer to pre-registration and junior pharmacists in their area of specialist practice.
5. Being a named tutor for a pre-registration and/or diploma pharmacist.
6. Lecturing on clinical issues relevant to the specialty, as part of the pre-registration training program, the clinical diploma, and any other in service training.
7. The post holder is also expected to participate in the training of other clinical professionals within their specialist area as requested.
8. Develop the role of a specialist pharmacist through national links.
Other
1. Provide a service commitment, typically a four hour session to a specific area within the pharmacy department e.g. dispensary, aseptics or medicines information.

3. Participate in the weekend service and where contracted, the emergency duty service.
