Job overview
We are recruiting for a Specialist Biomedical Scientist who shares our vision to provide consistently outstanding care and exemplary service to our patients.
You will provide specialist advice to clinicians regarding the appropriateness of tests and timescales. You will work independently and lead on a specialist area as directed by the Lead BMS. You will also act as a mentor for more junior scientific and support staff.
Main duties of the job
1. Process specialist investigations in the department.
2. Provide specialist advice to clinicians as to the appropriateness of tests and timescales.
3. Provide specialist services, e.g., training and problem-solving for specialist requirements.
4. Work independently and lead on a specialist area as directed by the Lead BMS.
5. Act as a mentor for more junior scientific and support staff.
6. Work flexibly in reflection of service needs, which may include an extended working day and/or participation in the delivery of a 24-hour, 7 days per week service.
7. Supervise and/or train less experienced staff in your area of work.
8. Maintain and promote the professional image of the Trust.
9. Lead and supervise a section of the laboratory where required.

Person specification
Qualifications / Training
* HCPC Registration as a Biomedical Scientist.
* Biomedical Science degree or equivalent.
* Evidence of CPD.
* Appropriate Post-registration IBMS Specialist diploma or IBMS diploma in Biomedical Science.
* European Computer Driving License or equivalent.
Previous Experience
* Theoretical knowledge and practical experience of specialist biomedical procedures relevant to the post.
* Substantial practical experience of working in a Biomedical Science laboratory.
* Experience of Pathology IT systems.
* Experience of Quality Management Systems.
* Experience of performing Risk Assessments.
* Previous relevant experience of working in the NHS.
* Previous experience of line managing staff.
Skills
* Willingness to undertake cross-training to extend skill set to deliver role.
* Excellent communication skills, written and verbal.
* Interpretation and analytical skills.
* Demonstrable interpersonal skills - can work as part of a team or independently.
* Ability to supervise less experienced staff, including supporting the training of staff.
* Ability to own workload and prioritize as needed.
* Proven influencing and negotiating skills at all levels.
Knowledge
* Theoretical knowledge and practical experience of specialist biomedical procedures relevant to the post.
* Knowledge of Pathology IT systems.
* Knowledge of Quality Management Systems.
* Knowledge/performance of Risk Assessments.
