The North Middlesex University Hospital are currently seeking an experienced SEN School Nurse at St Michaels Hospital /Enfield SEN schools.

Internal: Enfield Community Service colleagues.
External: Enfield Children Services, Local education providers, other health providers in the community, Local Authority / Public Health, CCG, Voluntary Agencies.
Job Summary:
The special school nurse will support children who are within 7 of Enfield’s special schools. To be a key professional working alongside the multidisciplinary team (MDT), to provide a full range of services for the individual child & family. To be an expert clinical children’s nurse to meet the needs of a diverse and challenging group of children and young people. To assess and review children and young adults who may require medical intervention or follow-up care or treatment and assist in the transition process to adult services.
Duties and Responsibilities:
1. Provide Specialist Paediatric care, advice and clinical management for a defined caseload of children and young adults.
2. Working together with special schools nursing team, be responsible for co-ordinating multidisciplinary assessments meeting the health needs of the child in partnership with parent/carers, education colleagues and the MDT.
3. Provide information for children & families, in an accessible manner, to enable understanding and informed decision making about the course of their care.
4. Provide support and advice to the child/young person and their family.
5. Act as a Lead Professional where appropriate. Liaising with education, social services, health, and voluntary sector to optimise the child’s quality of life, developing strategies with colleagues to achieve improved outcomes for the child/young person who has a recognised disability.
6. Be aware of and work constructively with areas of conflict expressed or implied by children, families, and other professionals.
7. Facilitate liaison with all members of the MDT, Community and Primary Care Services for individual families.
8. Be sensitive to the cultural and spiritual needs of patients and families from all ethnic/cultural backgrounds.
9. Work as a skilled team member, providing support to colleagues.
10. Support and/or provide training of education staff, ensuring their capability and confidence to care for the child in the educational setting. Train parents/carers in specific tasks as required.
11. Identify the specific needs and outcomes for individual children and support their families to facilitate meeting these needs.
12. Act as educational resource for health-related issues.
13. Participate in education programmes within and outside of the local borough.
14. Act as a mentor for students.
15. Work with other health care Professionals and interagency staff.
16. Develop a knowledge of other resources and support mechanisms.
17. Work in partnership with the multi-disciplinary team.
18. Be aware of and act in accordance with the Nursing and Midwifery Council Code of Professional Conduct.
19. Act as a role model within the specialist nursing service.
20. Demonstrate the key characteristics of a clinical leader.
21. Ensure that, where possible, all aspects of clinical practice are evidenced based.
22. Identify areas of practice that could be the subject of nursing research.
Essential requirements:
1. RSCN or Child Branch Qualification (or equivalent).
2. Learning Disability Qualified preferably.
3. Community nursing degree or be willing to work towards this in post.
4. ENB 988 or equivalent teaching and assessing course.
5. Evidence of continuing professional development.
6. Knowledge of safeguarding children’s issues.
7. Strong clinical skills.
8. Knowledge of current legislation affecting children’s services.
9. Community nursing experience.
10. Multi-agency & multidisciplinary work experience.
11. Relevant post registration experience as a children’s nurse, including acute experience.
12. Experience or working with children with special needs & complex health care needs in a school setting.
13. Excellent Communication Skills.
14. Team Player.
15. Adaptable to meet the needs of the service.
16. Full Driving License, for disabled applicants’ alternative arrangements may be arranged if necessary.
