With plans to see SP Energy Networks (SPEN), part of the ScottishPower Group, look to invest over £5bn in transmission projects across our transmission network in central and southern Scotland by 2030, the Transmission Commercial team will play a key role in supporting SPEN to work at pace to deliver the transmission network that is required to support ambitions Scottish and UK Government 2030 targets.
The Project Unit Manager will own and be the driving force for transmission HND projects of about £1,000m from concept through to handover to the delivery units. They develop and implement an approach for the development of HND projects and provide leadership and co-ordination across the internal stakeholder groups to ensure that projects are ready for delivery within agreed timescales with strict adherence to regulatory and licence obligations, including leading & developing multi-disciplinary teams.
This position has up to 6 direct reports.
What you'll be doing
1. Provide leadership for programme development and planning activities associated with HND projects.
2. Responsible for the effective team management of circa 6 direct reports including performance management, and ensuring other People processes are followed including identifying and implementing training and development requirements to ensure delivery of key project outputs and incentive mechanisms are in line with business targets.
3. Effectively manage project risk across the portfolio and mitigate the impact of issues that may emerge.
4. Develop accurate capital expenditure forecasts and output projections on assigned projects, with full accountability for project, contractual and financial governance.
5. Supervise the creation of robust project plans and interaction across the portfolio.
6. Liaise with Consent and Environmental Planning teams to ensure engineering development activity is programmed to meet external constraints and that the delivery timeline is achievable.
7. Communicate programme development and project status to key internal and external stakeholders.
8. Initiate and manage agreed handover points with delivery Project Units.
9. Engage and drive process improvement initiatives in concert with colleagues and other stakeholders.
10. Drive continual improvement through lessons learned and project/contract reviews.
11. Maximising the value of the team by effective leadership and professional development of staff.
What you'll bring
1. Significant experience in a line management position managing multi-discipline teams.
2. Significant experience in the management or development of large-scale infrastructure projects. This will include a detailed knowledge of project and programme management practices.
3. A working knowledge of health, safety & environmental legislation, including CDM.
4. Commercial awareness and experience of contract management.
5. Experience of procurement processes.
6. Developed negotiation and communication skills.
7. Ability to devise solutions to complex problems and challenges.
To be successful, as a minimum you will have:
1. Engineering qualification (BSc/BEng) and/or postgraduate qualification (MBA, MSc) or a minimum of HNC in an engineering discipline and 3 years project management experience.
2. Leadership skills and experience in managing a team.
3. Experience in the management of a programme of multi-disciplined, infrastructure projects.
4. Contract management experience. Ideally experienced in the NEC 4 suite of contracts.
5. Full UK driving licence with no convictions or penalties.
