Job Title: Deputy Manager
Reporting to: Room Nursery Manager
Job Summary:
1. To work under the direction of the manager and deputise as and when required.
2. To support the aims and objectives of the nursery and assist the manager in the organisation of a high quality establishment for children from birth to 5 years.
3. To provide high standards of childcare and education - to include the monitoring and review of provision, this includes providing a safe, caring environment to enable the emotional, social and educational development of children, through individual attention and group activities.
4. To assist with leading and implementing the Early Years Foundation Stage Framework and any other legal/statutory frameworks.
5. To direct and support staff as agreed by the nursery manager.
Main Duties:
The role requires the Deputy Manager to:
1. Support and liaise with the Manager on a daily basis.
2. Deputise for the Manager and to be responsible for the daily running of the Nursery, including care and welfare of the children and delivery of the curriculum, in her absence.
3. To adhere to the Nursery policies and procedures, with particular regard to Health and Safety, Behaviour, Safeguarding Children, Equality and Diversity, Inclusion and Special Educational Needs, and Confidentiality.
4. To be aware of, and responsible for, all aspects of health and safety, and to actively recognise that the safeguarding of the Nursery children is paramount.
5. To supervise and assist with the daily setting up of indoor and outdoor environments to provide for the safety, wellbeing and inclusion of the children attending the Nursery.
6. To ensure that all equipment and resources are maintained, tidied away and stored safely at the end of the Nursery day, and that the necessary preparation is carried out for the following day.
7. To assist with the planning and implementation of the curriculum with age appropriate and stimulating activities to ensure that the children’s learning and development needs are met.
8. To ensure that the children are able to make choices within their play and have the opportunities to engage in positive active play.
9. To be vigilant at all times to minimise risk and take immediate appropriate action to avoid accidents.
10. To foster appropriate behaviour by giving children clear, consistent and firm guidance whilst maintaining a caring and nurturing environment.
11. To carry out observations and assessments to identify children’s next steps, to be used to inform the curriculum planning.
12. Be a Key Person for a small group of children and assist staff that require support to do observations, planning and next steps for children.
13. To work in partnership with the children, parents / carers and other professionals.
14. To carryout and support staff to carryout parent consultations and to ensure that each key child’s Learning Journey is kept up to date, and to complete the two year progress check and, including a transition summary for the child’s transfer to the next setting.
15. Be the lead officer for safeguarding in the absence of the nursery manager.
16. To be the lead officer for SENCO.
17. To work with the Manager to ensure staff deployment, supervision, mentoring and recognition of training needs for all staff and students is in line with policy.
18. To hold some supervision sessions with staff as required by the nursery manager.
19. To support the Manager to ensure that all staff complete the appropriate paperwork for their key children on time.
20. To record accident, incident, risk assessment as and when required for the effective running of the nursery.
21. To respect and value the contributions made by all children, parents / carers, practitioners and other professionals within the Nursery community, and to foster a diverse and positive learning environment.
22. To be actively involved in the development and evaluation of the Nursery session procedures and the self-evaluation process.
23. To attend and assist in the preparation of activities out of contracted hours, including staff meetings, training sessions, parent consultations, and other meetings.
24. To ensure continued professional development through training, regular supervisions with the Manager and an annual appraisal.
25. To undertake any other Nursery duties and responsibilities as and when required by the Manager.
26. To be flexible within working practices of the Nursery. Be prepared to help where needed, including to undertake certain domestic jobs within the Nursery, e.g. preparation of snack meals, cleansing of equipment, etc.
27. Implement the equal opportunities policy fully and to work actively to overcome discrimination and stereotyping. Provide an environment that allows for consideration of the children’s ethnic, cultural, linguistic backgrounds and gender.
28. Administer first aid and comfort to sick children appropriately, making contact with parents when required.
29. Share in making decisions and recommendations about practice, routines and organisation of space, to maximise the achievement of all children.
