Background
We are seeking to appoint a skilled, autonomous, and experienced qualitative/multi methods researcher to contribute to an NIHR funded Advanced fellowship “DisconTinuAtion of hormone rePlacement thERapy (TAPER study); How and why do women decide and experience stopping hormone replacement therapy, why do women decide to restart and is a clinical trial comparing stopping methods feasible?”
The TAPER Study aims to improve NHS menopause care by collaborating with women, members of the public, healthcare professionals, and academics. This research programme involves four interlinked work packages. This role focuses on supporting the first three over a period of 24 months. The objectives of these work packages are:
1. Exploring the experiences of women who have stopped or are stopping hormone replacement therapy and the perspectives of the health care professionals caring for them using qualitative methods.
2. Conducting a systematic review and meta-synthesis of qualitative studies exploring stopping and/or restarting hormone replacement therapy.
3. Establishing what women value most when deciding to restart hormone replacement therapy using a discrete choice experiment.
The last work package involves a feasibility trial and does not form part of the advertised post.
The successful candidate will be expected to work closely with Dr Sarah Hillman, the fellowship holder, to successfully deliver these objectives.
The post-holder will be based in the department of Applied Health Sciences at the University of Birmingham. This role offers an exciting opportunity to collaborate with internationally leading women’s health research teams at the University of Birmingham, contributing to impactful advancement in menopause care.
Role Summary

Main Duties
* Conduct qualitative and multi method research as part of the NIHR funded advanced fellowship
* Identify, recruit and consent research participants
* Conduct literature searching and reviewing
* Collect, analyse and interpret qualitative and multi method data using appropriate methods
* Contribute to writing bids for research funding
* Contribute to developing new models, techniques and method
* Apply knowledge in a way which develops new intellectual understanding
* Supervise students on research related work and provide guidance to MSc/PhD students where appropriate to the discipline
* Undertake management/administration arising from research
* Contribute to Departmental/School research-related activities and research-related administration
* Contribute to Departmental/School education-related activities and education-related
* Contribute to enterprise, business development and/or public engagement activities of manifest benefit to the College and the University, often under supervision of a project leader
* Disseminate research outputs, including drafting academic publications or parts thereof, for example at seminars and as posters
* Provide guidance, as required, to support staff and any students who may be assisting with the research
* Deal with problems that may affect the achievement of research objectives and deadlines
* Promote equality and values diversity acting as a role model and fostering an inclusive working culture.
Person Specification
* First degree in area of specialism and normally, a higher degree relevant to research area or equivalent qualifications
* Experience of undertaking and timely completion of qualitative and multi method research, ideally in NHS settings and in women’s health
* Ability to communicate complex information clearly both orally and in written form
* Good knowledge of ethical and research governance in health-related research
* Experience of participant recruitment and obtaining informed consent
* Experience of using qualitative and multi method data collection and analysis methods
* Evidence of peer-reviewed publications
* Experience of working in multi-disciplinary research teams
* High level analytical capability
* Ability to communicate complex information clearly
* Ability to assess resource requirements and use resources effectively
* Understanding of and ability to contribute to broader management/administration processes
* Contribute to organisation and delivery of teaching relevant to area of specialism
* Contribute to the planning and organising of the research programme and/or specific research project
* Co-ordinate own work with others to avoid conflict or duplication of effort
* Knowledge of the protected characteristics of the Equality Act 2010, and how to actively ensure in day-to-day activity in own area that those with protected characteristics are treated equally and fairly
