Swimming Instructor
Salary: £28,163 - £30,559 per annum pro rata
Contract: Relief/Casual
Location: Starbeck Baths, Harrogate.
North Yorkshire Council is seeking a passionate and dedicated Swimming Instructor to join our Active North Yorkshire team. The successful candidate will be responsible for planning, delivering, and evaluating a variety of swimming lessons, fostering water confidence, safety, and technical skills across participants of all ages and abilities – from non-swimmers to advanced swimmers.
You will be based at Starbeck Baths, Harrogate and will work alongside the Leisure Centre Management Team to ensure the delivery of high-quality swimming lessons in a safe and supportive environment.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Deliver professional swim teaching and instruction in line with the latest Swim England Framework.
2. Create a friendly, welcoming environment, offering excellent customer service to all participants.
3. Plan and deliver engaging and motivational lessons tailored to different age groups and abilities.
4. Safely prepare teaching areas, including equipment set-up, and report any defective equipment for maintenance.
5. Ensure lessons start and finish on time and discuss progress with parents and participants.
6. Assist with first aid when necessary (if qualified) and support other specialist aquatic sessions where required.
7. Maintain accurate records and stay up to date with relevant CPD updates and Swim England guidelines.
Person Specification:
Essential Skills and Experience:
1. Previous experience working in a leisure/swimming pool environment.
2. Knowledge of safeguarding practices for children and vulnerable adults.
3. Understanding of health and safety in a swimming or leisure environment.
4. Ability to teach and adapt to different age groups and abilities.
5. Excellent communication and customer service skills.
Desirable:
1. Experience coaching or teaching a variety of sports.
2. Current working knowledge of the Swim England framework.
3. ICT literacy and strong administrative skills.
4. Creative approach to teaching and improving learner engagement.
Qualifications:
1. Swim England Level 1 Swimming Assistant (Teaching) or equivalent.
2. Swim England Level 2 Teaching Swimming qualification or equivalent.
3. RLSS Pool Lifeguard qualification.
4. Evidence of recent CPD updates.
Other Requirements:
1. Enhanced DBS check required.
2. Must be willing to learn and develop professionally.
