Material testing technicians perform a variety of tests on materials such as soils, concrete, masonry and asphalt, in the construction environment in order to verify conformance to intended usage cases and specifications.
The role will initially be based from our materials testing laboratory in Falkirk for a 4 to 8 week training period with accommodation and subsistence allowance provided. Thereafter, this role will be based in Argyll & Bute near Inveraray, where if required long term accommodation and subsistence will be arranged.
You will work under the supervision and direction on the Materials Testing Manager. Industry standard training will be provided in relation to the role from day 1 along with additional training on Health and Safety regulations. Relevant and necessary protective gear will also be supplied.
What you'll be doing
1. Record test data: Record data which has been identified specifically during preceding tests in order to verify that outputs of the test produce specific results or to review the reaction of the subject under exceptional or unusual input.
2. Report test findings: Report test results with a focus on findings and recommendations, differentiating results by levels of severity. Include relevant information from the test plan and outline the test methodologies, using metrics, tables, and visual methods to clarify where needed.
3. Apply safety procedures in laboratory: Make sure that laboratory equipment is used in a safe manner and the handling of samples and specimens is correct. Work to ensure the validity of results obtained in research.
4. Use testing equipment: Use equipment to test performance and operation of machinery.
5. Maintain test equipment: Maintain equipment used for testing the quality of systems and products.
6. Operate scientific measuring equipment: Operate devices, machinery, and equipment designed for scientific measurement. Scientific equipment consists of specialised measuring instruments refined to facilitate the acquisition of data
Who we're looking for
All candidates will be considered for this position who have a keen interest in joining Balfour Beatty as a trainee, with the view to progressing their career in the materials sector. Driving license essential due to the nature of the work and travelling between various sites in Scotland.
