The Role
The Deputy Head Academic is one of the five members of the Schools Senior Team (the other four are: Master, Usher, Bursar and Deputy Head Education Development).
The Deputy Head (Academic) leads and manages academic matters in the School, particularly in regard to curriculum and timetable, assessment and reporting, pupil progress and examinations.
They also lead the school's preparations for inspections by ISI. They share the line management of Heads of Department with the Deputy Head Education Development, and work closely with them on teaching and learning and staff development.
The Deputy Head Academic plays a key role in the recruitment of teachers and the admission of pupils.
The Deputy Head Academic will have a proven track record of commitment to and an understanding of academic leadership, along with experience of managing, coordinating and developing the work of teaching and support staff.
As a member of the school's Senior Team, they will attend a wide range of school meetings and governor committees, and play a key role in the development and implementation of whole school strategy.
The role attracts a timetable remission of around 80 and is not subject-specific. Given the scope of the role it is expected that the postholder will seek promotion to Headship in due course.
Key Responsibilities
Curriculum, Staffing and Timetable
* Leadership of curriculum development in the Senior School
* Oversight of the work of the Junior School Deputy Head Academic with regard to the Junior School curriculum
* Line management of the Director of Studies in the analysis of pupil subject choices, staffing needs, space needs and the creation of the school timetable
* Oversight of advertisements and procedures for the recruitment of teachers: In conjunction with the Deputy Head Education Development, leadership of teaching and learning, specifically within the context of a highly academically selective school
Examinations
* Leadership of all matters relating to the provision of public exams: compliance with JCQ/CAIE regulations, access arrangements, special consideration, post results services
* In conjunction with the Director of Studies, leadership and management of internal exams
* Analysis of results of public exams, and leadership of the response to public exam results with teachers, pupils and parents
* In conjunction with the Director of Studies and Heads of Year, analysis of results of internal exams
Pupil Progress, Assessments and Reports
* Leadership and management of the school's academic calendar for exams, assessments, reports and parents evenings
* Oversight and analysis of pupil baseline data
* Leadership of the Heads of Year with regard to pupil progress data analysis
* Leadership of the school's work with pupils and parents where there are concerns about the underperformance of a pupil
* In conjunction with the Registrar, oversight of admissions processes and analysis of the academic performance of applicants
Strategic Leadership
* Work closely with the Master and Senior Team on strategic planning, especially how this relates to academic matters
* Attend all full board and most sub-committee governor meetings, contributing as appropriate to the role
