Project OR Assistant Quantity Surveyor
This role exists to support the Commercial Manager to provide commercial expertise on all commercial aspects of reinforced concrete sub & superstructure, and civil engineering projects across various sectors, including HS2, commercial, residential, nuclear, and energy from waste.
Key responsibilities
Cost Management & Reporting
Manage and control project costs through the monthly cost reporting process, including preparation of CVR’s and detailed costs to completes,
Analyse monthly costs and provide advice and forecasts,
Preparing project budget to builds,
Compiling project cashflows,
Provide support and maintain deadlines in line with the financial reporting calendar,
Change Control & Risk Management
Identify and manage changes to the contract,
Price and agree variations,
Raise early warnings,
Contractual Management
Provide contractual advice and manage contracts, including NEC3 & JCT forms,
Deputise for the Commercial Manager, where necessary,
Work closely with project teams, and clients, to maintain constructive and positive working relationships that will deliver the outcomes required by the company,
Assist in providing feedback to Estimators on outputs and scope gaps,
Application & Valuation
Prepare & submit monthly applications for payment,
Agree valuation to try and close out variances, and ensure payments are made on time,
Accurate measurement of quantities from drawings, using standard methods of measurement,
Carry out an audit of the quantities,
Procurement & Subcontract Management
Preparing and issuing subcontract tender documentation including, where appropriate, preparing scopes of work,
Prepare bill of quantities/activity schedules, as required,
Analysing subcontract tenders and prepare comparison reports and recommendations for placement of orders,
Drafting subcontract agreements for approval,
Managing subcontract packages, including controlling variations, carrying out monthly valuations, issuing timely payment notices and, agreeing Final Accounts;
The ideal candidate
With at least 5 years quantity surveying experience, and having previously worked on sub and superstructure or civil engineering packages, specifically with concrete/RC Frame structures, basements & earthworks, the ideal candidate will hold a Quantity Surveying degree and a valid CSCS card and be able to demonstrate the following skill set:
Determination to excel within the role and execute responsibilities with due care & diligence, and attention to detail,
Experience of working with construction contracts particularly NEC3 & JCT,
Demonstrate a genuine interest in construction,
Have good numeracy and literacy skills,
Technically familiar and cost aware with an extensive knowledge of the construction process,
Ability to use a range of IT packages including Microsoft Office, notably Excel, and bespoke packages (including COINS, Conquest and Candy),
Commercially aware and ability to Identify commercial risk & opportunity,
Excellent communication skills, both written and oral with the ability to liaise with colleagues at all levels,
Self-motivated and proactive,
Good organisational skills and the ability to prioritise to meet deadlines,
Working knowledge of JCT and NEC Forms of Contract and Subcontract,
A driving licence and own vehicle will be a distinct advantage, as travel to and between sites will be required.
