Torbay and South Devon NHS Foundation Trust has recently become one of the first vertically-integrated health and care organisations in the country. The development of an Integrated Care Organisation (ICO) through the acquisition of Torbay and Southern Devon Health and Care NHS Trust by South Devon Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust has now taken place and is one of the major enablers in the transformation of services, and developing a new approach to health and social care. The Trust runs Torbay Hospital as well as Community Hospitals and hubs across Devon, employing approximately 6,000 staff. We will develop and redesign services that meet the needs of our local population and that are coordinated and integrated in ways that benefit service users. We will develop services that are responsive and flexible and link, without break, with services of our partner organisations such as primary care and mental health services. Opportunities to be part of designing and delivering innovative new services in Torbay and South Devon, including more integrated and streamlined care pathways for patients, are available to all current and newly appointed staff.
Clinical duties will be shared with present Consultants and will include all responsibilities normally expected in any major Emergency Department in the UK. The appointee will ensure that there is efficient and effective reception, resuscitation, diagnosis, and management of all emergencies attending the department. Emergency patients are promptly assessed and early decisions are made as to whether to admit to inpatient beds, operating theatres, or specialist units, and to other hospitals when necessary, or to arrange early discharge. The appointee will ensure that there is good liaison with other specialties to provide the highest standard of care to patients attending the department. Patients requiring follow-up are referred to the appropriate outpatient clinic or to the care of their GP, ensuring that their discharge information keeps their GP informed of the outcome of Emergency attendances.
Responsibilities include:
* Maintaining an overview of the flow of emergency patients through the Directorate while on duty.
* Working pro-actively with the re-enablement team (physio, OT, and social worker) within the Directorate to safely manage the early discharge of Emergency patients from the Emergency department.
* Providing an excellent training environment for all clinical staff.
* Undertaking routine daily clinical work alongside junior medical staff to monitor, audit, and improve standards of care for patients attending the department.
