The Health Care Assistant is expected to actively participate as a member of the nursing team and is responsible for contributing towards the smooth and efficient running of the department, particularly in the areas of CT and Fluoroscopy.
The Health Care Assistant will assist the radiographers, radiologists and nurses in giving individualised care to the patients.
Main duties of the job
This post is based at Princess Royal Hospital.
We require enthusiastic individuals to join our friendly team in the Radiology Department at PRH, in the CT Scanner Department.
You will be required to assist nurses, radiographers and radiologists in giving a high standard of quality care to our patients and will support the team in the smooth running of the department.
You will be required to work as part of the multidisciplinary team, maintaining a professional and caring manner.
You will gain a variety of experiences working in various areas of the department including the CT Scanner and Fluoroscopy.
Previous nursing experience is desirable but full training will be given.
Support will be provided to help you develop your skills within this speciality.

Job responsibilities
* To actively work at all times within the Trust policies and statutory legislation including emergency resuscitation and manual handling procedures.
* To maintain confidentiality of all information obtained through professional attendance on patients or through clinical access.
* To be active in enhancing own knowledge base.
* To act competently and demonstrate an understanding and knowledge of the basic principles of imaging and its effect on the patient.
* Participate as a member of the department team providing the highest standard of holistic care and ensuring effective communication with other members of the multi-disciplinary team (MDT).
* Undertake housekeeping duties such as cleaning couches, disposal of linen cleaning and tidying up etc. in accordance with hospital policy.
* Knowledge of Trust Policies on infection control, disposal of sharps and clinical waste, manual handling and control of substances hazardous to health.
* Report any change in patient condition or any problem or hazard within the department to the nurse in charge.
* To have good IT knowledge of the Radiology Information System (CRIS), booking patients on, confirming patients, inputting clinical details etc.
* Provide clerical assistance on receptions, photocopying and sending out appointments.
* To have the knowledge to appropriately prepare screening rooms and equipment for a wide variety of procedures.
* Collaborate with the nursing team and radiologist to ensure the correct preparation of patients prior to their procedure.
* Observe patients post procedure, checking observations and reporting any concerns to the nurse in charge.
* Transferring patients post procedure to recovery.
* Correctly identifying and preparing patients for the appropriate procedure, including adequate screening for patient safety.
* Ensure effective communication with patients and relatives, explaining procedures, giving advice and reassurance.
* Assist patients in all activities of daily living.
* Ensure safe transfer of patients whilst being aware of catheters, IV infusions etc following trust manual handling policy.
* Provide support to patient during procedure assisting with patient positioning whilst acting as chaperone and assistant to radiologist or sonographer.
* Provide post-procedural care for patient maintaining privacy and dignity at all times.
* Check validity of incoming requests with previous scans.
* To be competent in answering telephone queries, fielding complaints and requests for urgent scans and acting upon this information.
* To be actively involved in each procedure i.e. setting up sterile trolley, preparing appropriate ultrasound probes etc.
* To have a good understanding of ANNT and its appropriate use.
* Preparing appropriate paperwork and labels for specimens. Concise record keeping of specimens taken to laboratory.
* To be competent in performing cannulation for the administration of contrast.
* To be prepared to be flexible in shift patterns and willing to work at other sites if required eg RSCH.
* To be flexible in working hours and days including weekends.
Person Specification
Knowledge and Experience
* Must have Healthcare related NVQ, BTEC or equivalent at Level 3.
* National Care Certificate.
* Maths and English GCSE passes at grade D or above.
