Job overview
We currently have an exciting opportunity to join our existing team as a Band 7 Senior BMS in the Therapeutic Stem Cell Laboratory. You will be HCPC registered, have completed a specialist portfolio and have a relevant MSc or Higher Specialist Diploma.
The position will be based at the Oxford Road site of MFT and you will be contracted to work 24/7 depending on the needs of the service. In return we will provide a comprehensive induction program, support you in the development of your skills and knowledge as a Senior Biomedical Scientist through mentorship and annual appraisal.
Main duties of the job
Supervise staff and coordinate the organization of the department on a day-to-day basis. Deputize for the Chief BMS/Clinical Scientist and cover for other Senior BMS staff. Provide information and progress reports, e.g., staffing, workload, performance, and costing, to management at regular intervals.
Maintain professional standards working effectively and in accordance with ISO, JACIE, and HTA standards and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
You will be required to work with the Quality Lead to lead the department with processing workload and to plan and account for changing priorities, including the needs of the service to meet deadlines.
You will carry out processing work as appropriate and in accordance with Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) regulations.
You will perform risk assessments of stem cell-related procedures, both laboratory and clinical, and take responsibility along with the Chief BMS and Chief Clinical Scientist for authorization and release of a quality product.
Assist in routine Quality Assurance duties and audits to ensure HTA compliance plus other regulatory requirements relating to the collection of starting material and clinical trials for cellular therapies and ATIMPs including: document control system, change control, external qualification and audits as necessary, corrective and preventative actions (CAPA), internal audits, and develop and review related documentation.

Person specification
Qualifications and Knowledge
* HCPC Registration
* IBMS validated Biomedical Sciences Degree or Equivalent
* Evidence of MSc or equivalent
* Evidence of CPD in accordance with Health Professions Council guidance
* Completed IBMS Specialist Diploma, or appropriate short courses or individual learning programs, or evidence of equivalent knowledge and experience
* Validated training plan assessed by DLM or departmental training officer
Skills
* Evidence of working as part of a team
* Good communication skills including ability to communicate with peers and senior staff and clinical users of service
* Well-developed physical skills, especially in the manipulation of pipettes and other laboratory equipment. Also must be adept and precise when handling samples etc.
* Able to work unsupervised, to organise workload, and to organise and train less qualified or less experienced staff
* Able to demonstrate a high degree of skill and knowledge, where result interpretation can be highly subjective.
* Able to prioritise analytical work and plan day-to-day organisation of area of work
Knowledge and Experience
* Evidence of post-registration speciality training, in accordance with IBMS guidelines or equivalent
* Extensive post-registration experience in Haematology/Transfusion as a BMS Practitioner
* Have extensive working knowledge of laboratory areas, including both practical and theoretical knowledge of the various methods employed
* Also to demonstrate a sound understanding of the basic physiology, pathology and scientific principles relevant to Stem cell
* Able to operate and maintain complex automated and semi-automated equipment
* Display experience and competency in all laboratory areas.
* Able to contribute to assessing and suggesting changes to laboratory operating procedures
* Demonstrate a sound knowledge and application of quality systems, with particular reference to UKAS/HTA/JACIE
* Knowledge of Laboratory IT programmes and good keyboard skills
* Development of special interest and expertise in one or more areas of the laboratory, for example audit, quality, R&D, safety, training
* Knowledge of common IT programmes such as Word/Excel
* Experience within Stem cell
