JOB DESCRIPTION JOB TITLE: Senior Youth Worker
HOURS: 18 hours per week
SALARY: £14.21 per hour
CONTRACT:
12 months in first instance – possibility of extension (subject to a 6 month Probationary Period)
All staff employed by the Trust have an individual responsibility for promoting and safeguarding the welfare of the children and young people and vulnerable adults that they are responsible for, or come into contact with.
JOB PURPOSE
To take the lead in targeted youth work programmes within the Balsall Heath locality. Post holders will be required to take a proactive approach to developing new responses to the changing and emerging needs of young people. They will be required to work in a strengths-based and restorative way with young people and have well developed skills to develop strong relationships with others.
MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES
1. To undertake local research, coordinate and deliver youth work and services including outreach, detached youth work and youth participation.
2. They will be expected to both deliver and manage street based and outreach activities and be tenacious in seeking to develop relationships with young people.
3. They will enable young people to access a range of opportunities and receive information and support whilst targeting those who are most vulnerable and with the greatest need.
4. To provide high quality informal education prevention and early intervention opportunities for young people to help achieve their personal and social development, make informed decisions, have a place in their community and, ultimately, to reach their potential and make a successful transition into adulthood.
5. To plan, deliver and evaluate youth work programmes with learning and development outcomes for young people.
6. To engage young people through the building of relationships and provide strong role modelling of positive adult behaviours.
7. To work cooperatively with young people in the co-production of the services to ensure a Youth Voice is heard and established within Balsall Heath to help shape and inform wider community initiatives.
8. To work collaboratively with Youth Work assistants providing frontline supervision and support to enable them to effectively deliver front line youth work services meeting well defined, short term deliverables.
9. To be responsive to individual needs and identify when intervention is required from Early Help services and Children’s Trust, managing safeguarding referrals as a Designated Safeguarding Lead. Work in partnership with families and other key people in the young person's life, as well as with professionals from other organisations involved with young people such as social care, health, police, education, youth offending teams and local authorities, in order to build a strong support network.
10. Contribute to the development of the service through team meetings including representing the service at internal and external meetings and producing reports as required.
11. To work with allocated budgets and manage resources ensuring the safety, cleanliness and care of the environment and equipment, performing all the necessary risk assessment checks.
12. To ensure the equality of opportunity for all the children having an awareness of different cultures and faith as well as making necessary adjustments for disabled young people and those who have additional needs.
13. To contribute and support with fundraising activities and community events that help maintain services and supports future development of new services to the community.
14. To promote the service using social media and with other forms of marketing and communications.
15. Post holders will be expected to regularly undertake evening and weekend work to meet the needs of communities and young people.
16. To participate in the Trust’s performance management scheme.
17. To undertake personal professional development and training as appropriate.
18. To participate in the supervision process including the Probationary Review.
19. To undertake any other duties commensurate with the role and responsibilities of the post as agreed with your Line Manager.
20. To be familiar with and uphold the policies and procedures of the Trust especially those relating to Health and Safety, Equal Opportunities, Data Protection and Safeguarding.

EXPERIENCE/ KNOWLEDGE ••••••••••• Experience of working with young people in a youth work setting including outreach working. Experience of working with others within the community to co-produce services that meet their needs. Experience of working effectively to achieve targets and meet deadlines. Experience of supervising staff, including ability to delegate tasks and track performance. Experience of managing budgets and/or resources to assist with the delivery of activities/services. Experience of working with a wide range of professionals to develop and deliver shared initiatives for service delivery. An understanding of the role in relation to safeguarding the welfare of children and young people and experience of delivering early help support/services to young people and families. An understanding of child protection policy and procedures. An understanding of the role in relation to health & safety and the ability to follow procedures especially in relation to working with children and young people. Understanding diversity and the importance of equality of opportunity and the ability to apply equalities effectively within work practices. SKILLS AND ABILITIES ••••••••••• The ability to design, deliver and evaluate appropriate activities for young people with clear outcomes. Patience, tolerance, flexibility and a great deal of resilience when working with young people. Well-developed interpersonal skills, with the ability to establish and maintain good relationships with young people. The ability to treat young people’s concerns with respect, tact and sensitivity, while being aware of the limits that are required by confidentiality, competence and the boundaries that govern the youth/youth worker relationship. Ability to provide strong supervision & motivation to staff, and informally coach, guide and mentor less experienced staff and volunteers. Good verbal & written communication and presentational skills, and the ability to produce information that is appropriate for the target audience. Demonstrate a customer focussed approach and challenge stereotyping and advocate on behalf of young people. Commitment to inclusivity, diversity engagement & participation.
