NHS Locum Consultant for Emergency Medicine
It is an exciting time to be joining our team, as we have recently opened a brand new adjacent Paediatric Emergency Department and we are training our first cohort of CESR trainees in our own training programme run by CESR Consultants.
Main Duties of the Job
Contents of Job Plan
Job plans will vary based on the total PAs offered. The recommended post is 10 PAs, split into 7.5 DCC / 2.5 SPA. It is possible to work up to 12 PAs per week, incorporating one day with no hospital commitments and 1:11 on-call with prospective cover.
Applicants wishing to work fewer than 10 PAs are invited to contact us to discuss further details of their Job Plan. We have a number of consultants on fewer than 10 PAs, and as a department, we understand that a sustainable career requires flexibility around work.
Similarly, those with subspecialty interests are also invited to discuss further details of their potential Job Plan.
On-call Commitments
The Consultants currently operate a 1 in 11 rota with prospective cover for the Department. Current working practice is to be in the Department between 14:00-22:00 Monday to Friday when on-call, and for 6 hours on both Saturday and Sunday when on-call at the weekend.

Job Responsibilities
The clinical work comprises the receipt, resuscitation, initial treatment, and diagnosis of undifferentiated emergency attendees presenting 24 hours per day to a modern emergency department. You will provide supervision for junior clinical staff working in the ED during shop floor duties, and flexibility during working hours to further support the department if required. There are regular consultant-led ED safety rounds to ensure that all patients in the department have a clear management plan in place at all times, with a focus on comfort and dignity. We encourage close liaison with the inpatient teams throughout the day to optimise patient management and flow.
You will be supported in developing and maintaining your professional clinical, educational, and academic interests. The trust runs a series of Consultant Masterclasses for new consultants, and attendance is actively encouraged by the Medical Director.
Management duties may include organisation and facilitation of teaching (including simulation teaching), attendance at internal and external committees, staff recruitment and appointment, and the continuation and development of clinical governance, audit, and quality improvement projects.
The Consultants as a group, in conjunction with the Specialist Registrars in the Department, organise and take part in teaching programmes for junior medical staff, medical students, nurses, and paramedics who train in the department. Various other ad hoc teaching arrangements may be made through personal contacts. Medical students from Leicester are seconded to the ED throughout the year, while some also undertake electives in Pre-hospital and Emergency Medicine in the spring.
