Location: Farne Islands, The Sheiling, Seahouses, NE68 7SR
Contract Type: Permanent / Full-time
Reference/IRC: IRC159015
Closing Date: 26th January 2025
Salary: £23,868 pa
As a Ranger, you’ll play a crucial role in keeping the nation’s beloved countryside and coast in good shape, for wildlife and for people.
Accommodation is provided to the postholder for the proper or better performance of their duties in accordance with Trust criteria and HMRC rules. You'll need to find your own accommodation on the mainland for evenings and days off. There is accommodation on the islands which may be used during your working week on occasion or for early morning work. You will be ferried out to the island daily.
What it's like to work here:
You will need to get to and from Seahouses harbour to catch boats out to the islands and must be able to get to the National Trust office in Low Newton by-the-sea for induction and other workdays.
Island accommodation consists of shared dormitories, shared kitchen and living space. There is no running water and no showers on the island; water is brought on from the mainland in containers. If staying out on the islands, this will be on Inner Farne and Brownsman Island.
Travel between the Islands and the mainland is by boat, when sea conditions allow. The Trust owns rib crafts which are used by trained staff, and there are multiple larger tourist boats which can ferry rangers from the island to the mainland. Rangers will be required to attend a range of enhanced boat skills courses where necessary, including boat maintenance, navigation, and safety courses.
What you'll be doing:
You’ll be helping to protect and care for habitats, wildlife, buildings, and machinery. You’ll pass on your knowledge and enthusiasm to encourage others to love this area as much as you do. Whenever and wherever you come across people, you’ll take the time to talk to them and answer their questions, rather than rushing away to the next task.
You’ll ensure that the conservation work and outdoor experiences on the land in your care are of the highest standard. You’ll build relationships in the local community, proudly representing the Trust.
We’d love to hear from you if you’re:
1. Practically experienced in conservation work, to protect and improve habitats and landscapes
2. Able to work safely, using risk assessments and following guidelines
3. Have a full UK driving licence
4. Experienced in leadership and supervision
5. Experienced in seabird monitoring and conservation
6. Skilled in data handling
